Szalay comes up huge as Bulldogs down Lakers in double overtime

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior midfielder Christian Szalay (Vienna, Austria) scored with 26 seconds remaining in regulation against Clayton State Saturday afternoon to send the match to overtime, then netted the game-winner in double overtime to give the Bulldogs a thrilling 4-3 victory in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 9-3 overall, while the Lakers fall to 5-6 on the season.

Dionysius Harmon got Clayton State on the board less than five minutes into the first half, striking from the top of the box to make it 1-0.

Wingate tied it 10 minutes later when senior midfielder Felipe Checco (Brotas, Brazil) converted a penalty kick, scoring his third goal of the season to make it 1-1.

There were four goals scored in the final 23 minutes of regulation, starting with Kevin Otokore giving Clayton State a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute, scoring from the left side of the box.

Senior Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) tied the match less than 20 seconds later, converting a penalty kick to make it 2-2.

The Lakers took a 3-2 lead Kwaku got a cross from Harmon and found the back of the net in the 88th minute.

Wingate had the answer with just 26 seconds to go, with Ander sending a cross to Szalay, who beat his defender and netted his fourth goal of the season to send it to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Szalay struck again with just over two minutes left in the second overtime, heading home a corner kick from Ander to give the Bulldogs the dramatic victory.

Wingate out-shot Clayton State 20-7 on the afternoon, with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 5-0 corner kick edge. Junior Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected one save for the Bulldogs, while Oliver Pannell registered three saves for the Lakers.

Wingate is back in action next Saturday, traveling to Carson-Newman for a key SAC contest at 4 p.m.
