Wingate, N.C.----The third-seeded Lander University Bearcats made all five penalty kicks Sunday afternoon, advancing past second-seeded Wingate University in the semifinals of the 2017 NCAA Southeast Regionals. Lander moves to 13-3-3 overall, advancing to the regional finals, while Wingate ends its season at 14-4-2 overall.
Neither team had many chances in the opening half, with each side registering three shots including two shots on goal. Lander got shots from
Robbie Young and
Daniel Sonnerstedt, but both were easily stopped by Wingate goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile). Both Wingate shots on target came on free kicks just outside the box. A shot from
Filipe Checco (Brotas, Brazil) was turned away by a leaping
Dean Cowdroy, while a Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) free kick from the top of the box was also saved by Cowdroy.
Wingate got on the board in the 56th minute when a ball into the box hit the hand of a Lander defender. Ander converted the penalty kick for his 10th goal of the year and sixth of the postseason to make it 1-0.
Lander got the equalizer with 15 minutes left in regulation, when a corner kick from
Oliver Brock was headed home by
George Knight, tying it 1-1.
The overtimes went by with Lander collecting the only two shots in 20 minutes, with no team putting a shot on frame.
Lander went five-for-five in penalty kicks, with
Jordan Skelton,
Richard Bryan, Brock,
Sia Jamedar and
Ian Foulger converting their PKs. Ander, Checco,
Elma N'For (Yaoundé, Cameroon) and
David Fairgrieve (Newcastle, England) were successful for Wingate, making it 5-4 for the final kick of regulation. A shot from
Elliot Cutts (London, England) towards the lower left corner was turned away by
Aleksander Holboe to send the Bearcats to the regional finals.
Lander outshot Wingate 9-8 on the day, with each team registering five shots on goal. Cowdroy had four saves for the Bearcats, while Jara had four saves for Wingate.
