Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had six different players score at least seven points Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 74-52 victory over visiting Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate is now a perfect 3-0 in Cuddy Arena this season, improving to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Junior guard
Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Wingate attack. Junior forward
Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) added 14 points and three blocks, while senior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 13 points, three assists and two blocks, hitting three-of-six shots from three-point range. Graduate student point guard
Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) had eight points and 10 assists, notching double-digit assists for the second straight game, while senior forward
Devarious Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) had nine points, nine boards and three blocks.
Brandon Watkins had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead the Mars Hill offense.
Vernon Jackson also had 10 points, while
Justen Hartfield and
Austin Gilyard added eight points each.
Threes from Haskins and Robinson gave Wingate a 17-13 lead at the midway point of the first half, but Hartfield capped a 6-0 run with a layup to give the Lions a 19-17 advantage. Wingate scored nine of the next 11 points, taking a 26-21 lead on a Christian layup with 6:22 remaining.
A Nassyr Daniel bucket got the Lions within three, but the Bulldogs countered with a 17-3 run to take a 43-27 lead. A Haskins three and Farley dunk started the spurt, while Haskins and Lolar each contributed triples in the flurry. A Jackson layup with 14 seconds left cut the halftime deficit to 12 at 43-31.
A Watkins three-point play helped Mars Hill get within eight early in the second half, but Wingate used a 12-3 run to push the lead to 17. Farley started the spurt with a triple, while a Haskins three capped it. A Gilyard bucket got the Lions back within eight at the midway point, but a Farley three-point play sparked a 19-5 run to end the game. A Lolar triple and Robinson dunk pushed the lead to 16, while a three from
Jeremy Williams (Salem, Va.) put the 'Dogs on top by 20 with 3:11 to go.
Wingate shot 42 percent from the field, hitting 12-of-31 shots from three-point range (39 percent). The Lions shot 39 percent from the field, hitting two-of-seven shots from beyond the arc (29 percent). The Bulldogs held a 41-37 rebounding advantage and a 19-10 edge in second chance points. Wingate converted 17 Mars Hill turnovers into 15 points. The Bulldogs collected a season-high 12 blocked shots, with six different players registering at least one rejection.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, Dec. 13, traveling to Lincoln Memorial to face the fourth-ranked Railsplitters at 8 p.m.
