Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up a 6-1 victory in game one of Saturday's NCAA Division II doubleheader against the University of Mount Olive, but the Trojans rallied for a 2-1 eight-inning victory in game two. Wingate moves to 4-2 overall, while Mount Olive is 4-4 on the year.
Game One: Wingate 6, Mount Olive 1
Freshman
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game one. Senior
Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) was two-for-two with a homer and two runs scored, while sophomore
Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added a hit, RBI and run scored. Senior
Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) and freshman
Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) each drove in a run for the Bulldogs, while freshman
Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) went three-for-three with two runs scored.
Wingate got on the board in the second when VonCannon connected on the first homer of her Bulldog career, a two-run shot to left center. Mount Olive cut the lead in half in the third, taking advantage of a Wingate error to make it 2-1.
A Swenson single and a walk to start the fifth put two on with no outs for the Bulldogs, while a Doran RBI single would plate Swenson to make it 3-1.
Wingate scored three times in the sixth to make it 6-1. McLaurin started it by lining her first homer of the season over the fence in center, a solo shot to give the 'Dogs a three-run lead. Swenson lined a two-out double down the leftfield line, then scored on Sapp's RBI double to make it 5-1. Sapp scored on an RBI single from Woods to put Wingate on top by five.
Freshman right-hander
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-0. She allowed one unearned run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out two. Sophomore right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings to earn the save, striking out two.
Karen Foley took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Game Two: Mount Olive 2, Wingate 1 (8 innings)
Anna Ingram was two-for-three with an RBI to lead the mount Olive attack, while
JenniBeth Burge added an RBI for the Trojans.
Senior
Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) was one-for-three with a triple and an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. VonCannon added a hit and a run scored for the Bulldogs, who left 13 on base in game two.
After five scoreless innings, the Bulldogs got on the board in the sixth. VonCannon led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a bunt, then scored when Smith lined a two-out RBI triple to center, making it 1-0.
Mount Olive tied it in the top of the seventh, loading the bases thanks to two walks and a hit batsman. Burge tied the game with a sacrifice fly, sending the contest to extra innings.
Ingram's one-out RBI double in the top of the eighth plated the runner placed on second base to start the inning, giving the Trojans a 2-1 advantage. The Bulldogs were unable to plate a run in the bottom of the frame.
Emily Chaisson got the win, moving to 2-1. She allowed a run on five hits in eight innings of work, striking out one and walking six. Weidner took the loss, falling to 1-2. She allowed one earned run on three hits in eight innings, striking out five and walking five.
The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, hosting a doubleheader against Francis Marion at 1 p.m.
