Bulldogs drop two at Lander Wednesday

Greenwood, S.C.----The Lander University Bearcats used a walk-off hit in the final at-bat of game one, winning 10-9 over visiting Wingate University before prevailing 9-0 in game two of Wednesday afternoon's NCAA Division II softball doubleheader. The Bearcats improve to 4-4 overall, while Wingate falls to 4-6 on the season.
 
Game One: Lander 10, Wingate 9

Lander jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second, only to see the Bulldogs rally to take a 9-8 lead in the sixth. The Bearcats answered with two runs in the seventh to win it. Brianna Surrento went three-for-three with a homer to lead the Lander attack. Casey Kent drove in three runs for the Bearcats, while Makenzie Smith added an RBI and a run scored. Destiny Clyde also drove in a run for Lander.

Senior infielder Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had two homers and three RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game one. Freshman designated player Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) added a homer and three RBI, while sophomore outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) was two-for-four with a homer and three runs scored. Freshman first baseman Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) added two doubles and an RBI for the Bulldogs, while classmate Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) also drove in a run.

Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Doran connected on her second homer of the year, a two-run shot to make it 2-0. Lander had the answer, scoring eight times in the second to take a six-run lead. Surrento's two-run homer tied it, while a Wingate error and bases-loaded walk made it 4-2. Smith followed with an RBI single, while an error on the play allowed three more to score, making it 8-2.

Sapp connected on a solo shot in the top of the third, her first homer of the season, to get Wingate within five. Doran's second homer of the day and third of the year came in the fourth, a solo shot to start the frame, making it 8-4.

The Bulldogs scored five times in the sixth to take the lead. A hit batsman and walk put two on for Reep, who connected on her first career homer, a three-run shot to get Wingate within a run. A walk and an error put two more on base for Coyne, who tied the game with an RBI double. VonCannon then drew a bases-loaded walk to give the 'Dogs a 9-8 advantage.

Surrento led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, while a walk and a sacrifice put runners on second and third with one out. The second out of the frame came via strikeout, but Kent delivered the game-winning, two-run single to end it.

Surrento got the win, moving to 2-2. She allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three. Sophomore right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-3. She allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking eight.

Game Two: Lander 9, Wingate 0

Clyde, Surrento and Madison Moore each homered for the Bearcats in game two, combining to drive in six runs. Kelli McCormack added a double, RBI and run scored. Freshman catcher Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) led the Wingate offense, going one-for-two with a double.

Moore's two-run homer gave Lander a two-run lead in the first, while her RBI single in the third started a four-run rally. RBI singles from Ward and Kent, along with a bases-loaded walk, made the score 6-0.

Clyde connected on a solo homer in the fourth to make it 7-0. Surrento's two-run shot later in the frame made the final margin 9-0.

McKenzi Ferguson got the win, moving to 2-2. She tossed five shutout innings, striking out four and allowing only three hits. Reep took the loss, falling to 3-2. She allowed nine runs on seven hits in four innings, striking out three and walking five.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Flagler for a 12 p.m. start.
