Morgan shines again as Wingate finishes off weekend sweep over Shippensburg

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior right-hander Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) went eight innings Sunday afternoon, allowing just one run to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over visiting Shippensburg University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate finishes off the weekend sweep, winning its sixth straight to move to 8-7 on the year. The Raiders fall to 0-6 overall.

Redshirt freshman Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) had two doubles and an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) added a hit and an RBI, while senior Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) also drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Freshman McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each contributed a hit and a run scored.

Pitching dominated through the first five innings, with neither able to plate a run. The Raiders took the lead in the top of the sixth when Dalton Hoiles connected on a solo homer off the scoreboard in left to make it 1-0.

Wingate answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie it. Two walks and a wild pitch put runners on second and third for Barnette, who tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Goodwin followed with an RBI single to put the 'Dogs on top.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Mellett started the frame with a double to right center, then moved to third on a sacrifice from Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.). A sacrifice fly from Mason gave Wingate a 3-1 advantage.

That would be plenty for Morgan, who lowered his ERA to 2.48 with his second straight strong outing. The junior got a strikeout in the first, then got a big play from the defense when a runner was cut down trying to score from first on a double. He retired the Raiders in order in the next two innings, while stranding two in the fourth thanks to a strikeout to end it. Morgan worked a 1-2-3 seventh after allowing the solo shot in the sixth, while getting a strikeout and popout in the eighth to strand another runner.

Morgan moves to 2-2 on the year, allowing a run on seven hits in eight innings, striking out seven and walking one, throwing 117 pitches. The reigning SAC Pitcher of the Week was coming off a complete game win over Columbus State. He has gone 17 innings his last two starts, allowing just two runs while striking out 13 in a pair of 3-1 victories. Junior left-hander Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save of the year, notching a strikeout to end the game. Gabe Mosser took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed two runs on three hits in six innings, striking out 10 and walking three.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, traveling to Erskine for a 2 p.m. start. Wingate opens conference play at home next weekend, starting a three-game series against Erskine Friday night at 6 p.m.
