Due West, S.C.----The Erskine College Flying Fleet scored six runs in the first inning Tuesday afternoon en route to a 9-1 victory over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action. Erskine improves to 12-5 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-8 on the season.
Connor Greene and
Destin Nichols drove in two runs each to lead the Erskine offense, while
Chaz Davey added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
Chris Rave and
Kyle Heiss each contributed a hit and an RBI for the Flying Fleet.
Freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) homered to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore catcher
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) added a hit for the Bulldogs.
Davey's RBI single got things started for Erskine in the first, while another run scored on an error. Greene's RBI double and Heiss's RBI single made it 4-0, while a Nichols RBI single gave the Flying Fleet a six-run advantage.
Greene gave Erskine a 7-0 lead in the second with an RBI double. Rave's RBI double in the fourth gave the Flying Fleet an 8-0 advantage.
Wingate got on the board in the sixth when Mason connected on his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to left center to make it 8-1. A sacrifice fly from Nichols in the eighth made the final margin 9-1.
Isaac Rodgers got the win, moving to 2-0. He allowed a run on one hit in five innings of work, striking out four and walking two. Sophomore right-hander
Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed five runs on five hits in one-third of an inning.
The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, opening a three-game series against Anderson at 6 p.m. Wingate hosts a doubleheader against Anderson Saturday at 1 p.m.
