Duncan, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs dropped a tough 2-1 game against UNC Pembroke in their first game Sunday afternoon, while rolling to a 9-0 victory in the final game of the Mid-South Classic in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate moves to 10-10 on the season, with wins in five of its last six games.

Sophomore
Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Freshman
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added a hit and a run scored, while senior
Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) went one-for-two for the Bulldogs.
UNC Pembroke jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, getting an RBI double from Abbey
Walters, who then scored on a Wingate error.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the fifth. VonCannon started the frame with a single, then scored on a Wells RBI single to make it 2-1. A strikeout and double play ended the threat in the fifth.
Walters got the win, moving to 7-1. She allowed a run on three hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking two. Freshman right-hander
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 6-6. She allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings, striking out three and walking three.

Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) and
Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) each homered for the Bulldogs, while sophomore
Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) went three-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) had a double and two RBI, while freshman
Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) was three-for-five with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. VonCannon had three hits and a run scored, while freshman
Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Wingate got on the board in the second when Swenson connected on her first career homer, a solo shot to left. Floyd blasted her second career long ball in the fourth to push the lead to two.
The Bulldogs scored five times in the sixth to push the advantage to seven. VonCannon started the inning with a double, then scored on a Floyd RBI double. Sapp's RBI single made it 4-0, while Coyne added an RBI double to give the 'Dogs a five-run edge. McLaurin capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run double, making it 7-0.
Wingate scored two more runs in the seventh. VonCannon started it with a lead-off single, then scored on Sapp's RBI single. An RBI single from Woods plated Sapp to make the final margin 9-0.
Sophomore right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 4-5. She went the distance, allowing just four hits in her second shutout of the year, striking out four and walking two.
Hannah Boring took the loss, falling to 0-4. She allowed four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Sunday, hosting a doubleheader against Georgia College at 1 p.m.
