#6 Queens rides hot shooting in 96-80 NCAA Tourney win over Wingate

Charlotte, N.C.----The top-seeded and sixth-ranked Queens University Royals knocked down 17 threes on 58.6 percent shooting Saturday night, defeating eighth-seeded Wingate University 96-80 in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. Queens advances to the regional semifinals, improving to 29-3 overall. Wingate ends its season at 20-11.

Mike Davis had 25 points to lead the Queens attack, knocking down five triples. Jalin Alexander added 19 points, hitting five-of-seven shots from beyond the arc, while Ike Agusi contributed 16 points and 10 assists. Todd Withers added 14 points on three-of-six shooting from beyond the arc, while Daniel Camps had eight points and nine rebounds.

Senior forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with a game-high 27 points, adding three rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Sophomore guard Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, going six-for-10 from the field, while senior center Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) had 11 points, three boards and two steals. Classmate Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Senior guard Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) collected nine points, hitting three-of-five shots from beyond the arc.

A Davis three gave the Royals a 15-7 lead five minutes into the first half, but Wingate countered with an 11-3 run, tying it at 18 thanks to three Dominguez triples. Davis answered with a three and a layup, while back-to-back Withers triples helped the Royals take a 31-18 advantage.

A Doyle three and Griffin bucket got the 'Dogs back within eight at the 8:38 mark, but a Darryl White three gave Queens a 36-23 edge a minute later. Dominguez got the Bulldogs back within eight with a layup at the 5:12 mark, but Davis responded with another three to put the advantage back in double figures. A 9-0 run put the Royals on top by 18, taking a 49-31 lead on two Camps free throws in the final minute. Dominguez knocked down a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to cut the halftime deficit to 16 at 49-33.

A Davis bucket three minutes into the second half put the Royals on top by 20, while an Alexander three at the 15:49 mark made it 63-39. A Doyle three, along with free throws from Baez and Cureton got Wingate within 15 with 10:23 remaining. Baez added a bucket a minute later to make it 73-60. Agusi responded by scoring the next seven points, stretching the lead back to 20 at the 8:13 mark. The Bulldogs got no closer than 16 the rest of the way.

Queens shot 56.6 percent from the field on the night, the highest percentage allowed by Wingate this season. The 17 threes were the second most the 'Dogs have allowed this year. The Bulldogs shot 41.2 percent from the field, hitting eight-of-28 shots from beyond the arc (28.6 percent). Wingate held a 38-34 rebounding advantage, holding a 20-9 edge in second chance points. Queens converted 16 Wingate turnovers into 21 points.
