Hartsville, S.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed his second complete game of the season Friday afternoon, leading the visiting Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Wingate improves to 14-16 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while the Cobras fall to 15-10 overall and 7-6 in league play.
Sophomore infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) was three-for-five with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) added a hit and an RBI, while sophomores
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) and
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) each contributed a hit and a run scored.
Tanner Crosby went two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Coker offense, while
Robert Lybrand added a hit and a run scored for the Cobras.
Bryson Conner collected two hits and a run scored on the afternoon.
Coker jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Crosby's RBI single started the scoring, while Lybrand's RBI single gave Coker a 2-0 advantage.
Wingate scored twice in the fourth to tie it. Goodwin reached on a fielder's choice after a leadoff single from
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.). Turgeon followed with a double to put runners on second and third, while a Mason RBI groundout got the 'Dogs on the board. Little added an RBI single to make it 2-2.
That was all of the scoring until the top of the seventh. Little struck out to start the frame, but was able to reach via an error, while moving to second on a wild pitch, then going to third on a single from
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.). Little scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, giving Wingate a 3-2 advantage.
That would be enough for Donahue, who allowed just seven singles on the afternoon. After allowing a pair of runs in the second, he worked around a single in each of the next two innings, then got through the fifth and sixth without giving up a hit. A one-out single in the seventh was erased by an inning-ending double play, while a leadoff single in the eighth was also erased by a double play. Donahue got a groundout to begin the ninth, while striking out the final two hitters of the game.
Donahue threw 119 pitches in his complete game, striking out eight and walking two while allowing just one earned run to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Will Sutton took the loss, falling to 3-3. He allowed three runs on 11 hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
