Hartsville, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won the second game of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader 2-1 at Coker College to capture the weekend SAC series. The Cobras prevailed 8-1 in game one. The Bulldogs are 15-7 overall and 6-6 in the SAC after taking two out of three at Coker. The Cobras move to 16-11 overall and 8-7 in league play.
Game One: Coker 8, Wingate 1
Jon Koski went three-for-four with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Coker offense in game one.
Clint Allen was three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored, while
Thomas Lopez added two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Cobras.
Connor Cleary also contributed a hit and an RBI in game one.
Sophomore designated hitter
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) went two-for-four with a double and an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore catcher
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) added a hit and a run scored, while senior
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) and junior
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each collected two hits for the Bulldogs.
Koski's RBI double in the second gave the Cobras a 1-0 lead, while a Lopez RBI single in the third made it 2-0. Cleary's RBI single in the fourth put Coker on top by three.
Wingate got on the board in the fifth, when Llewellyn started the frame with a single, then moved to second on Barnette's single. Goodwin's RBI double made it 3-1.
Koski's RBI double in the sixth pushed the Coker lead back to three, while an Allen RBI single and Wingate error later in the inning made it 6-1. Koski's RBI groundout in the seventh put the Cobras on top by six, while an error on the play allowed the eighth run of the day to score for Coker.
Forrest Arnold got the win, moving to 4-0. He allowed a run on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Junior right-hander
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-3. He allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out three.
Game Two: Wingate 2, Coker 1
Llewellyn had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense in game two. Andrus piled up three hits and a run scored, while sophomore infielder
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) added a pair of hits.
Coker jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Koski.
Wingate answered with a run in the fourth to tie it. Llewellyn started the frame with a single, while Goodwin would then reach on a fielder's choice. He scored the tying run on a Coker error to make it 1-1.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the day in the fifth. Andrus led off the frame with a single, stole second, then scored on Llewellyn's RBI single, making it 2-1.
That would be enough for the pitching staff. Junior right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) allowed just one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out two to move to 3-2 on the year. Junior left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) tossed the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a run to notch his fourth save, striking out one and allowing just a hit.
Darius Coldiron took the loss, falling to 4-2. He allowed two runs on six hits in five innings, striking out two and walking one.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs host Newberry for a three-game SAC series next weekend, starting Friday at 6 p.m.
