Wingate, N.C.----The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders piled up 22 hits including four homers Tuesday night en route to a 19-5 victory at Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Belmont Abbey improves to 21-13 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 15-18 on the season.
Kennan Stanley hit for the cycle, going four-for-four on the night while driving in three runs and scoring three times to lead the Belmont Abbey attack.
Colin Rosenbaum,
Nick Nunziato and
Joshua Genthe also homered for the Crusaders, while
Kayden Krause added three RBI on the night. Every Belmont Abbey starter scored at least one run, with seven different starters driving in at least a run.
Redshirt freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Senior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) added two hits and an RBI, while sophomore infielder
David Nash (Monroe, N.C.) contributed an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Nunziato's two-run homer in the first gave Belmont Abbey an early lead. Mason cut the lead in half with a solo shot to start the bottom of the first, his sixth homer of the season.
The Crusaders scored the next 17 runs of the game, starting with a three-run fourth. Stanley started it with a two-run homer, while an RBI single from Krause made it 5-1. Belmont Abbey piled up seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by Rosenbaum's two-run homer to make it a 13-1 game.
A four-run Belmont Abbey sixth inning was highlighted by a Genthe two-run homer to push the lead to 15. Genthe's RBI double in the seventh helped the Crusaders go on top by 17, while an
Ian Mayers RBI triple made it 19-1.
Wingate scored three in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases via three walks. Mason plated the first run of the frame with a sacrifice fly, while sophomore
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added an RBI groundout. Barnette's RBI single made it 19-4. Nash added an RBI single in the ninth to make the final margin 19-5.
Troy Herterick got the win, moving to 3-0. He allowed a run on two hits in three innings, striking out one. Freshman right-hander
Alex Rodriguez (Kannapolis, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings, striking out two and walking one.
Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series against Newberry at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs and Wolves play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
