Bulldogs and Royals split Wednesday doubleheader

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs rolled to a 5-0 victory over visiting Queens University in game one of Wednesday's South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader, but committed six errors in game two as the Royals prevailed 5-1 to earn the split. Wingate moves to 19-15 overall and 6-2 in the SAC, while Queens is now 15-19 overall and 1-7 in league play.

Game One: Wingate 5, Queens 0

The Bulldogs got a pair of homers behind sophomore right-hander Rachel Weidner's (Greenville, N.C.) two-hit shutout in game one. Freshman infielder Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Classmate Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) also homered, while senior infielder Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) added two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Sophomore catcher Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) also drove in a run, while sophomore outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) had two hits and a run scored.

Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Swenson connected on her second career homer, a solo shot to left. McLaurin's sacrifice fly in the third inning made it 2-0, while an RBI single from Wells put the 'Dogs on top by three.

Wingate took a 4-0 lead in the fifth, scoring on a Queens error. Floyd connected on a solo shot in the sixth, her fourth homer of the year, making the final margin 5-0.

That would be plenty for Weidner, who moved to 10-7 on the year, notching her fourth shutout of the season. She allowed just two singles in seven innings of work, striking out five and walking four. Allison Lopez took the loss, falling to 0-3. She allowed five runs on 12 hits in six innings, striking out one and walking one.

Game Two: Queens 5, Wingate 1

Kelly Winter was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Queens offense. Ashton Whitaker added an RBI for the Royals.

Senior infielder Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) homered to lead the Wingate attack in game two.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Whitaker's sacrifice fly. Winter made it 2-0 with an RBI double in the fourth, then scored on a Wingate error to make it 3-0. A pair of Bulldog errors in the sixth allowed another run to score, making it 4-0.

Doran got the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, connecting on her fourth homer of the year to make it 4-1. A hit batsman and another Wingate error in the top of the seventh allowed another run to score, making the final margin 5-1.

Courtney Pearson got the win, moving to 10-13 on the year. She allowed a run on five hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking two. Freshman right-hander Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 9-8. She allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings, striking out one and walking four.
