#10 Queens eliminates Wingate in SAC Tourney semifinals

Greenville, S.C.----The 10th-ranked Queens University Royals avenged a pair of regular season losses against Wingate University, prevailing 79-51 in the SAC Tournament semifinals Saturday night in Timmons Arena. The Royals improve to 27-3 overall, advancing to Sunday's title game against Lincoln Memorial. Wingate falls to 20-10 overall. Wingate ended the night with a season low in points and field goal percentage.

The Bulldogs will now wait to hear their postseason fate when the NCAA Division II Tournament bracket is released. Wingate was ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA Southeast Region poll. The Bulldogs received an at-large bid in last year's tournament. The selection show airs Sunday at 10:30 p.m.

Todd Withers had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Royals, hitting five-of-eight shots from three-point range. Daniel Camps had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Ike Agusi contributed 14 points and five assists. Mike Davis added 11 points and four steals for the Royals.

Sophomore guard Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) had 14 points to lead the Wingate attack, adding seven rebounds while going three-for-five from the field and two-for-two from beyond the arc. Senior Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) contributed 10 points and five boards, going four-for-six from the field, while classmate Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had eight points for the Bulldogs.

A Baez layup gave Wingate an early 4-3 lead, but Queens countered with a 17-0 run, taking a 14-point lead on Agusi's three at the 14:23 mark. A Baez three and Dominguez bucket got the 'Dogs within 10, but a Withers three made it 28-11 with 8:33 remaining in the half. A layup and two free throws from Camps extended the lead to 22, while two Davis free throws at the 2:19 mark made it 42-17. Four free throws from Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) in the final 90 seconds cut the halftime deficit to 42-21.

The Bulldogs scored the first nine points of the second half to get within 12. Griffin started the spurt with a putback and a dunk, while a Baez triple at the 16:28 mark made it 42-30. Agusi buried a three to push the lead back to 19, but a Dominguez triple got Wingate back within 15 with 13 minutes left. A Darryl White three and Withers putback gave the Royals a 58-36 lead, while a Camps layup extended the advantage to 28 with 7:13 to go. The Bulldogs got no closer than 24 the rest of the way.

Queens shot 45.5 percent from the field, going 14-for-27 from three-point range (51.9 percent). The Bulldogs shot a season-low 26.5 percent from the field, scoring a season-low 51 points while hitting just three-of-20 shots from beyond the arc (15 percent). Queens held a 36-32 rebounding advantage, while the Royals converted 20 Wingate turnovers into 21 points.
