Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs connected on five homers Saturday afternoon, but the Carson-Newman University Eagles picked up a pair of victories, winning game one 13-11 while prevailing 3-1 in game two to complete the weekend sweep in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Eagles improve to 23-20 overall and 10-11 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 17-27 overall and 8-13 in league play.
Game One: Carson-Newman 13, Wingate 11
Greg Jones had a homer and four RBI to lead the Carson-Newman attack in game one, while
Paul Kirby also homered for the Eagles.
Trever Lee drove in a pair of runs, while
Cade Snapp had three hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Ryan Addington contributed an RBI and a run scored, while
Brendan Campbell and
Jimmy Rice had an RBI each.
Wingate got homers from five different players in game one, with
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.),
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.),
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.),
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) and
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) each connecting on long balls. Sophomore infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added an RBI and a run scored, while junior
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was three-for-five with two runs scored.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, starting when Andrus led off the game with his first homer as a Bulldog. Barnette followed two batters later with his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to make it 3-0.
Carson-Newman scored three in the third to tie it. Kirby led off the frame with a solo homer, while a Lee sacrifice fly and Addington RBI groundout made it 3-3.
Llewellyn put the Bulldogs back on top in the third, connecting on his sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot to make it 5-3. The Eagles again had the answer, tying it on a two-run homer from Jones in the bottom of the frame.
Carson-Newman took its first lead of the day in the fourth, getting an RBI single from Snapp and RBI groundout from Jones to take a 7-5 advantage.
Wingate scored three times in the fifth to regain the lead. Mason tied it by blasting his seventh homer of the season to left center, a two-run shot. Daniel followed with his second homer of the week and of his career to give the 'Dogs an 8-7 advantage.
Rice's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth tied it 8-8. Brown scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth, while a sacrifice fly from Andrus in the seventh put Wingate on top 10-8.
Kirby scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, while Warren's RBI groundout made it 10-10. Jones put the Eagles on top in the eighth with an RBI double, while Campbell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push the lead to two. Lee's RBI groundout made it 13-10.
Wingate cut the lead to two in the ninth when Daniel scored on Little's squeeze bunt, making the final margin 13-11.
Ryan Eberle got the win, moving to 4-6. He allowed a run on a hit in two innings of work, striking out one and walking three. Senior right-hander
Brandon Dorsey (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed two runs on two hits in an inning of work, striking out one.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 3, Wingate 1
Kirby provided the offense for the Eagles, connecting on a homer and driving in all three runs. Carson-Newman had just three hits on the day, with Wingate out-hitting the Eagles 7-3, but the 'Dogs left eight runners on base while Carson-Newman did not strand a runner.
Llewellyn was two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Andrus added a hit and a run scored, while Barnette collected a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kirby connected on a three-run homer.
Wingate got on the board in the third, loading the bases on a hit batsman and singles from Little and Barnette. After a pair of strikeouts, Llewellyn's RBI single got the 'Dogs on the board, making it 3-1.
Will Gardner got the win, moving to 5-3. He allowed a run on seven hits in seven innings, striking out eight and walking one. Junior right-hander
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-4. He allowed three runs on three hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking one.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Erskine at 6 p.m.
