Wingate, N.C.----The Erskine College Flying Fleet scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday night, rallying for a 3-2 victory at Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Erskine improves to 25-18 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 17-28 on the season.
Henry Faunce was two-for-four with an RBI to lead the Erskine offense.
Chris Rave and
Taylor Maxey each added an RBI for the Flying Fleet.
Senior catcher
Logan Pingley (Madison Heights, Va.) drove in a run to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) had a hit and a run scored, while freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) drew a pair of walks and scored a run.
Erskine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Trevor Wood reached on a one-out single, then scored on Maxey's RBI single.
Wingate got on the board in the fifth. Little reached on a one-out fielding error, then scored on an Erskine throwing error to make it 1-1.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth. Mason drew a lead-off walk, then moved to third when a pickoff throw from
Ian Kimbrell was thrown away. Mason then scored on Pingley's squeeze bunt to give the 'Dogs a 2-1 advantage.
Erskine regained the lead with two runs in the seventh. Rave's RBI single tied it, while Faunce followed with an RBI single to give the Flying Fleet a 3-2 advantage.
Noah Hinzman got the win, moving to 2-3 on the year. He tossed 3 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Freshman right-hander
Cameron Smetak (Monroe, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed a run on a hit in one-third of an inning. Redshirt sophomore right-hander
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed three innings in shutout relief for the Bulldogs, striking out six.
Wingate is back in action Friday, hosting Tusculum at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs and Pioneers play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
