#8 Queens takes 2017 SAC crown with 16-0 victory over Wingate

Charlotte, N.C.----The number eight Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team won the 2017 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse tournament title with a 16-0 championship game victory over Wingate University. Royals sophomore attack Hanna Scott (Centreville, Va.) had five goals to lead the top-seeded hosts.

Queens improves to 16-3 overall and will await word on the NCAA play-offs when the pairings are announced May 7. Wingate finishes its best season in school history 13-5 overall. Playing in their first SAC championship contest, the Bulldogs set a school-record for victories this year. Wingate head coach Caline McHenry Olmsted founded the WU program four years ago as the Bulldogs played their first season in 2014.

Scott shared team-high point total honors with senior attack Abigail Paulus (Pickerington, Ohio) as the duo posted six points each. Scott had one assist to go with her five scores, while Paulus posted four goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Alexandra Bruder (Ocean City, Md.) and freshman attack Ally Blood (Jarrettsville, Md.) added two goals each for the tournament hosts.

Wingate sophomore goalie Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) had a career-high (tying) 18 saves for the Bulldogs. She played 60 minutes Saturday. Queens freshman goalie Chase Brokaw (Sykesville, Md.) had six saves in the same time span. The Royals outshot the Bulldogs 37-7.

Scott was named the tournament MVP. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Brokaw, Bruder, Paulus, senior midfielder Kelly Dowd (Stony Point, N.Y.) and senior defender Aarika Kaester (Rochester, N.Y.). Wingate was represented by Pierre, senior midfielder Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) and senior defenders Morgan Insel (Plantation, Fla.) and Kendall Sienon (Woodstock, Ga.). Coker junior attack Haley McCusker (Warwick, R.I.) and Lenoir-Rhyne junior goalie Ines Flueck (Coppell, Texas) complete the honor squad.

BULLDOG NOTES

Insel will go down in history as the only Bulldog to start every game (60-of-60) during the first four years of the program. Insel, Sienon and senior midfielder Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) have been with the program since day one, serving as starters throughout their respective careers. Swanson and Dempsey served as team captains this year.

Five Bulldogs received All-SAC laurels this season. Pierre, senior attack Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) and redshirt junior attack Shannon O'Neal (Severna Park, Md.) made the first team. Dempsey and Insel were named to the second team. Both Andrews and Dempsey surpassed the 100-goal plateaus for their respective careers.
