Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) scored a pair of second half goals Wednesday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory at Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate wins its fourth straight, improving to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The defending national champions have now won 14 consecutive regular season league matches. Mars Hill falls to 1-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the SAC.
The first half went scoreless, with the Bulldogs out-shooting Mars Hill 8-4, while each team registered one shot on goal.
Wingate got on the board 10 minutes into the second half. Ander split a pair of defenders at the top of the box, then lined one into the left corner, netting his first goal since the 2016 NCAA national championship match to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Mars Hill got the equalizer with just over 10 minutes left in regulation when
Jordan Lennon scored off a
Sam Roe assist to make it 1-1.
The Bulldogs had the answer in the 88th minute. A foul just outside of the box gave Wingate a free kick. Ander blasted one just under the cross bar in the upper left corner, giving the 'Dogs a 2-1 advantage.
Wingate out-shot the Lions 15-5 on the night, with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Ander led all players with five shots. Junior goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) registered one save for the Bulldogs.
Ben Lucas had a pair of saves for Mars Hill.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 5 p.m. start.
