Bulldogs strike early in 5-0 win at Mars Hill to push winning streak to four

Mars Hill, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored twice in the first five minutes and four times in the first 27 minutes Wednesday afternoon, rolling to a 5-0 victory at Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate wins its fourth straight, improving to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3 in league play.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth minute, when junior Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored her first goal of the year, getting an assist from senior Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.).

Leyble put Wingate on top by two less than a minute later, scoring her third goal of the year off an assist from sophomore Carley Olson (Waterloo, Ill.).

The Bulldogs took a three-goal lead 20 minutes into the first half when a cross from Leyble found junior Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.), who netted her second goal of the year to make it 3-0.

Sophomore Taylor Krakower (Wayne, N.J.) gave Wingate a four-goal edge with 18 minutes remaining in the opening half, taking a cross from freshman Carly Veit (Pinehurst, N.C.) and scoring her first goal of the season.

Wingate's final goal of the day came in the 87th minute, when freshman Sienna Ahlers (Los Alamos, N.M.) scored her first career goal, tucking one under the cross bar off another assist from Veit.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Lions 18-4 on the day, holding a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. Zickert and Krakower led the way with three shots each. Senior goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected one save in the first half for the Bulldogs, while junior Abbey Frail (Winston-Salem, N.C.) notched a pair of second half saves. Kaitlyn Danglemaier had seven saves for Mars Hill.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 2 p.m. start.
