Newberry, S.C.----Wingate University junior
Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored seven minutes into overtime Saturday afternoon, giving the visiting Bulldogs a 1-0 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate wins its fifth straight, improving to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The first 45 minutes went scoreless, with the Wolves out-shooting Wingate 10-7, and holding a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs nearly got on the board in the 18th minute, but a shot from freshman
Carly Veit (Pinehurst, N.C.) hit the crossbar.
Wingate outshot Newberry 9-6 in the second half, with a 5-1 edge in shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net as the game went to overtime.
Fleischli finished the game in the 97th minute. Junior
Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) found freshman
Lily Butler (Sanford, Fla.) in the box. She sent one to Fleischli making a run across the box and she netted her second game-winner of the week.
Wingate finished the day with an 18-16 advantage in shots, holding an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Freshman
Taylor Krakower (Wayne, N.J.) led the Bulldogs with four shots, including one shot on goal, while Veit added a shot on goal in addition to the shot off the crossbar. Senior goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) registered five saves for the Bulldogs, while
Jayleen Gant had seven saves for Newberry.
Wingate is back in action next Saturday, hosting Lincoln Memorial at 1 p.m.
