Wingate is #22 in this week’s WBCA NCAA Division II top 25 poll

Lilburn, Ga.----The Wingate University women's basketball team is number 22 in the most recent WBCA NCAA Division II top 25 coaches' poll, officials announce this week. The Bulldogs (10-2 overall, 4-1 SAC) were number 22 in the Dec. 22 (pre-Christmas) poll.
 
On Sunday, Bulldog senior guard Taziya Moody (Columbia, S.C.) hit the go-ahead jumper with 20 seconds left to boost visiting Wingate to a 72-69 NCAA Division II women's basketball victory over Chowan University. Moody was one of four Wingate student-athletes to hit double-figure points. WU junior guard Caroline Averette (Midlothian, Va.) led the visitors with 17 points and eight rebounds. WU junior center Zasha Barrett (Monroe, N.C.) had a career-high 15 points. Junior forward Danasia Witherspoon (Hickory, N.C.) netted 13 points, while Moody achieved a season-high with her 11 points.
 
Wingate returns to South Atlantic Conference action tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 3), visiting Queens University of Charlotte for a 6 p.m. contest. The Bulldogs travel to Anderson (S.C.) Saturday (2 p.m. tip). Wingate's first 2018 home game is next Wednesday (Jan. 10) when the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears come to Union County for a 6 p.m. encounter.
 
Wingate leads the South Atlantic Conference with 15 appearances in the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Bulldogs have an overall NCAA tourney record of 15-15 with Elite Eight appearances in 1995, 1996 and 2008. Wingate has won 11 SAC regular season championships and nine SAC tournament crowns.
