#24 Wingate sweeps past Catawba and into SAC semifinals

Wingate, N.C.----The top-seeded and 24th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs rolled past eighth-seeded Catawba College Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 South Atlantic Conference volleyball tournament in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-16 to improve to 27-1 overall, advancing to Friday's SAC Tournament semifinals. Catawba ends its season at 10-22 overall.

"With tonight being the first round of a single elimination tournament, we had to work through some tension and find a rhythm to our play tonight. I know our team is excited about moving onto the semifinals, so we can build on the positives from tonight, while at the same time we need to keep improving. Our team has been really good at taking one match at a time, so we will be well-prepared for the semifinals."

KEY STATS

- Wingate hit .314 on the match with 45 kills and 13 errors
- Catawba had 26 kills and 13 errors, hitting .124
- The Bulldogs had four blocks compared to Catawba's three
- Wingate piled up eight aces, with half coming from Rachel Alles; Catawba had four aces
- The 'Dogs picked up 59 digs, 20 more than the Indians

- A kill and a block from Havenaar sparked a 4-0 run that made it 16-10
- Kills from Givens, Havenaar and Lambillotte put the 'Dogs on top 20-11

- The Bulldogs piled up 18 kills against three errors, hitting .441
- Catawba had 10 kills and four errors to hit .176
- Havenaar and Holmquist each had four kills in six swings
- Lambillotte added three kills in three swings; Williams also had three kills
- Alles handed out 16 assists; Adams had seven digs
- Wingate's 9-0 run turned an even set into a 16-7 advantage
