‘Dogs down Trojans 70-63 Friday night

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----Six different Bulldogs scored at least eight points Friday night as Wingate University downed the University of Mount Olive Trojans 70-63 in NCAA Division II men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 6-5 overall, while the Trojans fall to 4-7 on the season.

- Wingate shot 44 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-28 threes (25 percent)
- Mount Olive shot 41 percent from the field, connecting on eight-of-23 from beyond the arc (35 percent)

KEY BULLDOGS

- Jarren Cottingham had 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, going five-for-seven from the field
- Tristan Huebner had a career-high 10 points on four-of-five shooting, adding five rebounds
- Frankie Johnson had nine points, four boards and two steals
- Jakob Dawkins contributed eight points, five boards, four assists and a block
- Marco Haskins had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals
- Emarius Logan added eight points, going six-for-six at the free throw line

FIRST HALF

- WU jumped out to a 13-4 lead eight minutes in, getting four Quantra Taylor points along with a Haskins triple
- A three from Jonathan Mebane got the Trojans within two at the 8:18 mark
- Four free throws from Logan put the 'Dogs on top 21-15, but UMO scored the next seven points, with a Michael Brown layup giving Mount Olive the lead
- Wingate countered with a 6-0 run, taking a 27-22 lead on Cottingham's steal and layup
- A three from Cottingham in the final minute gave the Bulldogs a 33-27 halftime lead

SECOND HALF

- Darius Spragley hit a three in the opening minutes to get Mount Olive within one at 33-32
- Layups from Dawkins and Francis Sio put the 'Dogs on top by eight at the 16:40 mark
- Cameron Robinson's three got UMO back within five, but WU scored the next 10 points
- Dawkins started the spurt with back-to-back buckets, while threes from Haskins and Huebner made it 50-35 with 14 minutes left
- UMO used a 13-2 run, getting within four on a Jamaal Matin layup at the 9:16 mark
- Another Huebner three put the 'Dogs on top 55-48 a minute later
- A Dawkins dunk with four minutes left made it a nine-point game, but Mebane's three cut it back to six
- Logan's layup made it 66-58 at the 2:20 mark, but Matin's triple with 1:08 to go got UMO within three
- Johnson knocked down four free throws the final 28 seconds to give the 'Dogs a seven-point win
