Wells drives in seven as ‘Dogs split season-opening DH against Erskine

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior catcher Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) had a grand slam and seven RBI in game two of Saturdays NCAA Division II softball doubleheader, leading the Bulldogs to a 13-3 game two victory in five innings of Erskine College. The Flying Fleet won the opener 3-1 in eight innings. Both teams begin the year 1-1 overall.

Game One: Erskine 3, Wingate 1 (8 innings)

Brittany Rhinehardt had an RBI and run scored the lead the Erskine attack, with Sydney Smith adding a double and an RBI to support a strong outing from Morgan Hendrix.

Sophomore pitcher Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) was one-for-two with an RBI for the Bulldogs, while freshman outfielder Gracyn Polk (Concord, N.C.) went one-for-three with a double.

The Flying Fleet got on the board in the second inning when Parker Birch led off the frame with a double down the third base line, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Julia Cole.

That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh. Polk started the rally with a one-out double to right center, while an error put runners on second and third. Reep just missed ending the game, sending one to the wall for a sacrifice fly, plating pinch runner Meagan Martucci (Huntersville, N.C.) to send the game to extra innings.

Rhinehardt put the Flying Fleet back on top with an RBI single in the top of the eighth, while a sacrifice fly from Smith made it 3-1.

Hendrix got the win, allowing one unearned on two hits in eight innings, striking out five and walking two. Reep took the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits in eight innings, striking out nine and walking five.

Game Two: Wingate 13, Erskine 3 (5 innings)

Wells had a grand slam and seven RBI while also scoring two runs to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while junior Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, Calif.) added two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman infielder Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) went three-for-four with a stolen base and three runs scored, while sophomore infielder Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) added a double and an RBI.

Erskine got on the board in the second, getting back-to-back singles and an error to take a 1-0 lead.

Wingate had the answer, scoring six times in the bottom of the frame. Hannah's RBI groundout tied it, while Sapp put the 'Dogs on top with an RBI single. Wells followed with the big blow of the inning, a three-run double off the wall in left center to make it 5-1. She scored on Floyd's RBI double to give the Bulldogs a five-run cushion.

Wingate tacked on six more runs in the third inning. Hannah started the scoring with an RBI single, while Sapp's second RBI single in as many innings made it 8-1. Wells then blasted a grand slam over the scoreboard in left to give the Bulldogs a 12-1 advantage.

Erskine scored twice in the fourth inning, but Cashwell reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the frame, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, then scored on a wild pitch to make the final margin 13-3.

Freshman right-hander Sam Hogan (Albemarle, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-0. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits in four innings, striking out three. Hannah Houge took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to North Greenville for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs are back home Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Augusta at 1 p.m.
