Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior right-hander
Nick Stegman (Frederick, Md.) retired the first 16 batters he faced Tuesday afternoon, while senior outfielder
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) collected three hits, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs to a 7-2 victory over Erskine College in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate moves to 4-0 overall, while the Flying Fleet fall to 2-2 on the year.
Andrus was three-for-five with a triple, adding a pair of stolen bases. Junior infielder
Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) and sophomore infielder
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) each contributed a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs, while freshman outfielder
Justin Guy (Greensboro, N.C.) collected a hit and two runs scored.
Wingate got on the board in the second with Guy reaching on a fielder's choice, then going to third on a single from Andrus. Guy scored when Andrus stole second and the throw went into center field, while a wild pitch allowed Andrus to cross the plate to make it 2-0.
Junior outfielder
Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, stole second, then scored on a Schneider RBI single to make it 3-0. Wingate blew it open in the sixth, highlighted by a two-out, two-run triple to right from Andrus. He scored on another wild pitch to give the 'Dogs a six-run advantage.
Erskine got on the board in the eighth, getting RBI singles from
Chaz Davey and
Austin Mapes to make it 6-2. Mellett lined an RBI double to center in the bottom of the frame to make the final margin 7-2.
Stegman was the story Tuesday afternoon. The Hagerstown Community College transfer took a perfect game into the sixth inning, retiring the first 16 hitters he faced until allowing a one-out double in the sixth. He got out of the frame with a strikeout and groundout, ending his afternoon.
Stegman moves to 1-0 on the year, allowing just the one hit through six innings, striking out four without walking a batter while throwing 78 pitches. Sophomore right-hander
Alex Rodriguez (Kannapolis, N.C.) worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief, while junior right-hander
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) worked a perfect ninth inning.
Zach Farmer took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in four innings, striking out five and walking four to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Wingate is back in action this weekend, traveling to Florida for three games, starting Friday against Florida Tech. The Bulldogs take on Flagler Saturday, then wrap up the weekend Sunday against Valdosta State.
