Tigerville, S.C.----The North Greenville University Crusaders picked up a pair of one-run victories Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II softball action. The Crusaders took the first game 1-0, while a walk-off homer gave NGU the 4-3 game two victory to move to 2-0 on the year. The Bulldogs fall to 1-3 overall.
Game One: North Greenville 1, Wingate 0
Taylor Koon was one-for-two with an RBI to lead the North Greenville offense, with
Amanda Coffrin firing a two-hit shutout.
Chelsea Rivers went one-for-three with a double and a run scored for the Crusaders.
Sophomore pitcher
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) went one-for-three with a double to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder
Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added a hit for the Bulldogs.
The Crusaders scored the game's lone run in the second inning. Rivers led off the frame with a double to left, then scored on Koon's one-out RBI single. North Greenville mustered only one hit over the final five innings of the contest.
Wingate's best chance came in the final inning, with Reep lining a one-out double to left center. Coffrin responded by striking out the final two batters of the game to secure the victory.
Coffrin moves to 1-0 on the year, striking out 10 and walking three while allowing only two hits in seven innings of work. Reep falls to 0-2, allowing a run on three hits in six innings of work, striking out nine and walking just one.
Game Two: North Greenville 4, Wingate 3
Grace DeBoer went two-for-three with a double, homer and three RBI to lead the North Greenville offense in game two.
Jaelin Griffin added an RBI, while
Ashton Withers collected a pair of hits and a run scored for the Crusaders.
Reep homered to lead the Wingate offense, with Sapp and junior catcher
Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) each contributing a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Freshman infielder
Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) added two hits, a stolen base and a run scored, while senior
Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) also had a pair of hits.
Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Cashwell singled to start the game, stole second, then scored on a Wells RBI single.
DeBoer's RBI double in the bottom of the third tied it, while Griffin's sacrifice fly in the fourth gave North Greenville a 2-1 advantage.
Sophomore infielder
Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) led off the sixth by drawing a walk, then scored on a two-out RBI single from Sapp to make it 2-2.
Wingate regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Reep connected on a two-out solo homer, her first of the season to make it 3-2.
North Greenville had the answer in the bottom of the frame.
Brooklyn Stone led off the inning with a single, then stole second. DeBoer came to the plate with one out and delivered the game-winning two-run homer to left.
MacKenzie Dyson got the win, moving to 1-0. She allowed two runs on three hits in two innings, striking out one and walking one. Junior right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. She allowed two runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out three.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Augusta at 1 p.m.
