Reep homers twice, wins twice as ‘Dogs take two from Jaguars

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore right-hander Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) allowed just one run in 11 2/3 innings of work, picking up a pair of wins while also connecting on two homers and driving in four runs at the plate, leading the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep against Augusta University in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate won the opener 6-1, while prevailing 11-8 in game two to improve to 3-3 on the year. The Jaguars fall to 1-3 overall.

Game One: Wingate 6, Augusta 1

Sophomore infielder Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) had a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense, while Reep added a solo shot. Freshman outfielder Gracyn Polk (Concord, N.C.) went one-for-three with an RBI, while classmate Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) and sophomore Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) also drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

Wingate got on the board in the third when junior catcher Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) lined a two-out double off the wall in center, then scored on an RBI double from Floyd.

Reep led off the fourth with her second homer of the season, a solo shot to center to make it 2-0. Sapp smacked a one-out double to left in the fifth, then scored on another RBI double from Floyd. Polk followed with an RBI single to plate Floyd, making it 4-0.

Augusta's lone run of game one came in the top of the sixth when Savannah Gabriel led off the frame with a solo shot to right center.

A Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) single and Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) double put runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the frame for the Bulldogs. Woods drove home the first run with an RBI groundout, while Cashwell followed with an RBI groundout to make it 6-0.

Reep picked up her first win of the day and the season, going the distance while allowing a run on just three hits, striking out six and walking one. Before the solo homer in the sixth, the sophomore had allowed only a pair of infield singles. Morgan Hunter took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work, striking out five.

Game Two: Wingate 11, Augusta 8

Reep and Sapp each homered, drove in three runs and scored twice to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Swenson was two-for-three with a double, two RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore outfielder Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs.

Lydia Hausman had a homer and three RBI to lead the Augusta attack in game two, with Kelsea Hunter adding a triple and three RBI for the Jaguars. Bella Fernandez contributed an RBI and run scored, while Lindsey Stokes had a double and an RBI.

Augusta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by Hausman's three-run homer to left.

The Bulldogs responded with a five-run second to take the lead. Swenson's RBI double started the scoring, while she scored on VonCannon's RBI single to make it 4-2. Sapp followed with her first homer of the season, a three-run shot to left to put Wingate on top 5-4.

The Jaguars answered with four runs in the top of the third, with Hunter's three-run triple giving Augusta an 8-5 advantage.

Wingate got within a run in the bottom of the third, with a Swenson sacrifice fly and VonCannon RBI single making it 8-7.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the fourth, with a Sapp single and Polk walk putting two on with two outs for Reep. The sophomore unloaded on her third long ball of the year, a towering three-run shot to left to put the 'Dogs on top 10-8.

Floyd led off the sixth inning with her third double of the afternoon, then scored on Swenson's RBI single to make the final margin 11-8.

Reep picked up the win in relief, tossing 4 2/3 shutout innings allowing just two hits, striking out seven to move to 2-2 on the year while lowering her season ERA to 1.09. Hunter took the loss, falling to 1-2. She allowed four runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.

Wingate is back in action Thursday, hosting Lander for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs had a doubleheader scheduled for this Sunday against UNC Pembroke, but that game has been moved to Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. due to rain in the forecast this weekend.
