Pembroke, N.C.----A six-run sixth inning was not enough for No. 22 Wingate University Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs fell 9-6 at UNC Pembroke in NCAA Division II baseball action. The Braves improve to 14-5 overall, while Wingate falls to 18-6 on the season.
Ethan Baucom had a homer and two RBI to lead the UNC Pembroke offense.
Roberto Rivera and
Trevor Clemons each added two RBI and a run scored, while
Connor Grainger went three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
Trey Jacobs and
Bobby Dixon each added an RBI and a run scored for the Braves.
Senior outfielder
Trent Wynn (New Bern, N.C.) had a homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielder
Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) added a triple, two RBI and a run scored, while junior catcher
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) contributed an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Grainger's RBI double in the second got UNCP on the board, while an RBI single from Clemons and Jacobs RBI groundout in the third made it 3-0.
The Braves scored three more runs in the fourth, with Rivera's RBI single and a Clemons sacrifice fly making it 6-0.
Wingate answered with a six-run sixth inning to tie it. A walk and
Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) single put two on for Forry, who lined a two-run triple to right to get Wingate on the board. Llewellyn followed with an RBI single to make it a three-run game. After a
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) single, Wynn connected on his first homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to make it 6-6.
UNC Pembroke had the answer in the bottom of the frame, with Rivera's RBI single putting the Braves back on top. Baucom added some insurance in the seventh, connecting on a two-run homer to make the final margin 9-6.
Aaron Biggerstaff got the win for UNCP, moving to 4-0 on the year. He allowed three runs on three hits in an inning of work, striking out one.
Gunner Deal worked a scoreless ninth to notch his first save of the season. Junior right-hander
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed a run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game series at Coker at 2 p.m.
