#18 Bulldogs move to 8-2 in league play with 14-10 victory at Coker

Hartsville, S.C.----The 18th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead Friday afternoon en route to a 14-10 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night. The Bulldogs improve to 19-6 overall and 8-2 in the SAC, while the Cobras fall to 10-12 overall and 0-10 in league play.

Junior infielder Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) had a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Classmate Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) added three hits, two RBI, three stolen bases and three runs scored, while junior catcher Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) went three-for-six with a double and two RBI. Infielders Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) and McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) drove in two runs apiece, while freshman outfielder Justin Guy (Greensboro, N.C.) collected three hits while driving in a run and scoring a run. Seniors Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) and Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) each contributed two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Michael Serafin and Tanner Crosby each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Coker offense. Thomas Lopez had an RBI and three runs scored, while Lake Lybrand had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Wingate jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. An error and two walks loaded the bases for Forry, who plated the first run of the day with an RBI single. Brown followed with a sacrifice fly, while a two-run single from Daniel made it 4-0. Guy capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single to put the 'Dogs on top by five.

Schneider led off the second inning with his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to left center, while Goodwin's RBI single later in the frame plated Forry to make it 7-0. Brown led off the fourth with a single, while back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A wild pitch and bases-load walk to Branton gave Wingate a 9-0 advantage.

Coker scored six times in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to three, getting a Crosby two-run double and Lybrand RBI single to make it 9-6.

Forry drew a lead-off walk in the fifth, stole second, then scored on Goodwin's RBI double to put Wingate back on top by four. A sacrifice fly and Hall RBI single got the Cobras within two in the bottom of the sixth.

The Bulldogs went back on top by three in the seventh on Mellett's RBI groundout. Forry's RBI single in the eighth plated Branton, who started the frame with a single, giving Wingate a 12-8 advantage.

Coker got back within two in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single from Serafin, making it 12-10.

Wingate regained a four-run lead in the top of the ninth, starting with Mellett's RBI single. Schneider's sacrifice fly plated Guy, who reached on a bunt single, making the final margin 14-10.

Sophomore right-hander Josh Karklin (Waxhaw, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-0 on the year. He allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of work. Michael DeVecchio took the loss, falling to 3-3. He allowed seven runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings. The Bulldogs left 17 runners on base Friday, while the Wingate defense turned four double plays on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs and Cobras are back in action Saturday afternoon, wrapping up the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at noon.
