Hartsville, S.C.----The 18th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs erased a five-run deficit in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Coker College, tying it in the eighth before falling 10-9, but rebounded by prevailing 8-5 in the second game to take two out of three in the weekend South Atlantic Conference baseball series. Wingate moves to 20-7 overall and 9-3 in the SAC, while the Cobras move to 11-13 overall and 1-11 in league play.
Game One: Coker 10, Wingate 9
RJ Ball and
Thomas Lopez each drove in two runs to lead the Coker offense in game one, while
Brooks Estrada and
Michael Serafin each added an RBI and two runs scored.
Connor Cleary also contributed an RBI and run scored for the Cobras in game one.
Senior infielder
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) was four-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Junior infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) was three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored, while classmate
Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) also drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) drove in a run and scored twice for the Bulldogs.
Coker jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, starting with RBI singles from Estrada and Serafin, while a two-run single from Lopez put the Cobras on top by five.
Wingate scored four times in the third to make it a one-run game. Branton plated the first run of the frame with an RBI single, while a two-run single from Little made it 5-4.
The Cobras regained a three-run advantage in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles from Cleary and Ball. Ball's solo homer in the fifth made it 8-4, while an RBI double from Swiderski in the seventh gave the Cobras a 9-4 advantage.
Wingate answered with a five-run eighth to tie it. Little got it started with a two-out single, then scored on a wild pitch. A Branton RBI single and Mellett RBI double go the Bulldogs within two, while Schneider's two-run singled made it 9-9.
Estrada lined a two-out triple in the bottom of the frame, then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Griffin Hollifield got the win, moving to 2-1. He allowed two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking one. Sophomore right-hander
Sawyer Lee (Norwood, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. He allowed two runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.
Game Two: Wingate 8, Coker 5
Junior catcher
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) had a double, homer, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Senior
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was two-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored, while Little went two-for-four with an RBI for the Bulldogs. Branton also had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Crosby had an RBI and run scored to lead the Cobras in game two, while
Larry McCabe added two hits and an RBI.
Bryson Connor also drove in a run in game two for Coker.
Wingate took a 2-0 lead in the second when Goodwin connected on his second homer of the season, a two-run shot to left.
The Bulldogs scored five times in the third to push the lead to seven. Brown's RBI single drove in the first run, while Goodwin's two-run double made it 5-0. Little's RBI single and a Coker error put the 'Dogs on top 7-0.
A Wingate error in the bottom of the frame allowed Coker to get on the board, but Branton's RBI single in the fifth made it 8-1. Connor drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame to get Coker back within six.
The Cobras score three times in the sixth to make it a three-run game. A Crosby double and Wingate error plated the first two runs of the inning, while McCabe's RBI single made it 8-5.
Junior right-hander
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) got the win, moving to 2-2. He allowed one earned run on two hits in five innings, striking out eight and walking four. Freshman left-hander
Riley Edwards (Hickory, N.C.) worked the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his first save, striking out four without allowing a hit. Derek Roy took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, falling to 1-2 on the year.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting a doubleheader against Mount Olive at 3 p.m.
