Catawba's late goal lifts Indians to 12-11 SAC victory over Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----Catawba College freshman midfielder Brooklyn Tilley (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds to play, boosting the visiting Indians to a 12-11 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Wingate University Wednesday afternoon at Graham Gill Field. Tilley led Catawba with three goals.
 
For Wingate, sophomore attack Kendall Wells (Elkridge, Md.) and freshman attack Morgan Akers (La Plata, Md.) matched Tilley with three goals each. Bulldog freshman goalie Marley Blycher (Leesburg, Va.) had eight saves in the last 24 minutes as the hosts mounted a comeback from a four-goal deficit.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

-Wells added two assists to her three goals, giving her a game-high five points.
-Wingate outshot Catawba 36-28. The Indians held a slim 25-21 edge in shots on goal.
-Catawba had 14 ground balls, while Wingate picked up 12.
-The two teams split 24 draw controls 12 each.
-The Indians converted three free-position shots (in eight tries), while the Bulldogs made one free-position shot (in four attempts).
-Wingate scored the game's only extra-man goal.
-Catawba senior goalie Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) earned the win. In 60 minutes, she had 10 saves.
-Blycher took the loss, allowing three goals while posting the aforementioned eight saves. Wingate junior goalie Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) had five saves and nine goals allowed in 35-plus minutes played.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Half
 
Catawba led 7-5 at intermission as Tilley scored the visitors' first and last goal of the half. Wingate took an early 2-1 lead on a goal by Akers at the 24:28 mark. Wells assisted on the play. The Indians made a 4-0 run to go up 5-2 at the 10-minute mark, thanks to a free-position goal by junior attack/midfielder Erin Green (Stratford, N.J.).
 
Wingate responded as Wells outscored Catawba 3-1 by herself, pulling the hosts within one goal with 69 seconds left. Tilley closed the first-half scoring on an assist from Catawba sophomore attack Katie Barth (Baltimore, Md.) with 23 seconds left.

Second Half

Akers tied the score for the first time since 2-2 on her goal at the 12:43 mark, making the tally 10-10. After a Barth goal five minutes later, Wingate freshman midfielder Nina Cifolilli (Kent Island, Md.) recorded an unassisted goal to tie the game at 11-11. Tilley's subsequent game-winner resulted from a free-position shot.
 
NOTABLES
 
-Wingate has had four one-goal games this season. The Bulldogs are 0-4 in these contests.
                                     
NEXT ON THE AGENDA

Wingate steps out of SAC play Sunday, hosting Saint Leo at 1 p.m. Catawba heads up the mountain Saturday to face SAC foe Lincoln Memorial at 12 noon.
