Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore pitcher
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) collected five hits and a win Thursday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a doubleheader split against Coker College in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won the opener 7-1, while falling 8-2 in game two to move to 11-17 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Cobras moves to 20-10 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Game One: Wingate 7, Coker 1
Sophomore infielder
Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) was three-for-four with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense in game one. Junior catcher
Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) added a hit and two RBI, while Reep was four-for-four with a double and two runs scored. Freshman
Sam Hogan (Albemarle, N.C.) collected a hit and an RBI, while senior
Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) also drove in a run in game one.
Wingate broke open a scoreless tie in the third, plating three runs. A walk and Reep single put two on for Swenson, whose RBI double got the 'Dogs on the board. Wells followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0.
Wingate scored four times in the fifth to push the lead to seven. A
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) single and Reep double put two on to start the frame for Swenson, whose RBI double drove home VonCannon to make it 4-0. A Hannah sacrifice fly and Hogan single pushed the advantage to six, while a Coker error made it 7-0. An
Allyson High sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth got the Cobras on the board, making the final margin 6-1.
Reep got the win, moving to 9-6. She allowed a run on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out seven and walking two.
Taylor Forehand took the loss, falling to 1-2. She allowed seven runs on nine hits in four innings of work, striking out six and walking two.
Game Two: Coker 8, Wingate 2
Cacey Simmons had a homer and two RBI, while
Diane Servideo also drove in a pair of runs to lead the Coker offense in game two.
Katelyn Chambers and
Hannah Price each collected a hit, RBI and run scored for the Cobras.
Reep and sophomore outfielder
Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) each homered to lead the Wingate offense in game two.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Reep's seventh homer of the season, a solo shot to right center.
Coker scored five times in the third, with a Servideo two-run double capping the scoring in the frame to make it 5-1. Simmons connected on a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 7-1.
Woods got Wingate within five with her fourth homer of the season in the fifth, a solo shot down the left field line. Coker regained a six-run lead in the seventh, scoring on a Wingate error to make the final margin 8-2.
Christine Carver got the win, moving to 12-5. She allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out one and walking one. Junior right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-5. She allowed two earned runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, traveling to Newberry for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
