Gaffney, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs erased an early 5-1 deficit Tuesday night, prevailing 9-6 in NCAA Division II baseball action at Limestone College. Wingate improves to 26-8 overall, while the Saints fall to 14-16 on the season.
Senior outfielder
Trent Wynn (New Bern, N.C.) had a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Junior infielder
Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) was one-for-two with two RBI, while sophomore infielder
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) went two-for-two with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman catcher
Jed Bryant (Lexington, N.C.) also homered for the Bulldogs, while senior outfielder
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a double and two runs scored.
Brandon Banks,
Brennan Strovink and
Trace Whetsell each homered for the Saints.
Chase Allen and
Channing Painton each added an RBI on the night.
Whetsell put Limestone on top with a solo homer in the first. Banks and Strovink added back-to-back homers in the second to make it 3-0.
Wingate got on the board in the top of the third, with Bryant connecting on his first career homer to get the 'Dogs within two. RBI doubles from Allen and Painton in the in the next two innings gave the Saints a 5-1 advantage.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the sixth to tie it. Wynn's RBI single started the rally, while a two-out, two-run single from Schneider made it 5-5.
Wingate took its first lead of the night in the seventh when Wynn connected on his second homer of the season, a two-run sot to make it 7-5.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the eighth to take a four-run lead. Mellett drove home Andrus with an RBI single, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. An RBI single from Banks in the bottom of the ninth made the final margin 9-6.
Sophomore right-hander
Alex Rodriguez (Kannapolis, N.C.) got the win, moving to 5-0. He tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings, striking out three and walking two. Junior right-hander
Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, then worked the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season, allowing a run on two hits while striking out three.
Michael Todd Harris took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings, falling to 0-2.
Wingate is back in action Friday, hosting Carson-Newman at 6 p.m.
