Wingate, N.C.----The 24th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs committed a season-high six errors Friday night, falling 7-4 against visiting Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Eagles improve to 19-13 overall and 11-5 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 26-9 overall and 11-5 in league play.
Jordan Griffin was three-for-three with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Carson-Newman offense.
Tyler Thompson added an RBI and a run scored, while
John Sharpe added two hits and an RBI for the Eagles.
Micah Genter and
Cade Snapp also drove in runs on the evening.
Senior designated hitter
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was three-for-five with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) also homered, while senior outfielder
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was two-for-four with an RBI for the Bulldogs. Junior infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added two hits and a run scored.
Carson-Newman got on the board in the top of the first, with
Brett Langhorne starting the game by reaching on an error, then scoring on Snapp's RBI groundout.
Wingate tied it in the bottom of the frame when Mellett connected on his third homer of the season, a solo shot to right center.
The Eagles regained the lead in the second on Grififn's solo homer to left center. Griffin added a two-out RBI single in the fourth, while Thompson's sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 4-1.
Griffin led off the seventh with a single, then scored on Sharpe's RBI single to give the Eagle a five-run lead. Three Wingate errors in the eighth led to two more Carson-Newman runs to make it 7-1.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the frame, starting with Brown's 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot to right. Andrus added an RBI single to make the final margin 7-4.
Dillon Cate got the win, moving to 4-1. He allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings, striking out 10 and walking five.
Will Gardner worked 1 1/3 innings for his ninth save of the year, striking out all four batters he faced. Senior right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-1. He allowed seven runs (two earned) on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out one without walking a batter.
The Bulldogs and Eagles wrap up the three-game series with a Saturday doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
