Veterans lead Wingate to thrilling 12-11 SAC victory over LMU

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior attack Seth Grimwood (Huntingtown, Md.) had a game-best five points (three goals, two assists) as the Bulldogs earned a 12-11 come-from-behind South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse victory over Lincoln Memorial University Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field.
 
Wingate graduate student goalie Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) made two huge saves in the final 50 seconds to preserve the win. WU junior midfielder Conor Gronbach (Cary, N.C.) had two goals and one assist, while classmate and position mate Wyatt Weiseman (Jensen Beach, Fla.) won 19-of-26 face-offs. The Bulldogs handed the LMU Railsplitters their first conference loss of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
-WU sophomore attack Josh Ferentinos (Gaithersburg, Md.) had one goal and two assists, while senior attack Jeremy Sullivan (Crofton, Md.) posted two scores.
-Nine different players scored goals for LMU, while eight various players found the back of the net for Wingate. Neither team led by more than two goals Saturday afternoon.
-The Bulldogs had the statistical upper-hand in shots (31-30), ground balls (34-22), face-off victories (19-7) and extra-man goals (2-1).
-Jacob Ormerod played the last 25 minutes-plus in goal, registering six saves and surrendering four goals. WU redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Ahrens (Austin, Texas) had five saves and seven goals allowed in the first 34-plus minutes.
-LMU freshman goalie Michael Kessler (Wantagh, N.Y.) went the distance, giving up 12 goals in 60 minutes. He recorded six saves.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Quarter
 
Wingate led 4-3 after the opening 15 minutes as four different players scored one goal each. Bulldog junior attack Ryan Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) finished the first-quarter scoring on an assist from Ferentinos at the 2:17 mark.
 
Second Quarter
 
Ferentinos scored the first goal of the second quarter (12:56) before LMU responded with the last three to take a 6-5 lead to the halftime locker room. Railsplitter redshirt sophomore midfielder Reggie Golfin (Detroit, Mich.) finished the frame with an unassisted goal at the 5:16 mark.
 
Third Quarter
 
LMU senior midfielder Adam Golia (Victoria, B.C.) continued the visitors' streak with a goal at the 13:13 mark, making the score 7-5 Railsplitters. Wingate answered with a 5-1 run to take a 10-8 edge on a Gronbach goal with 7:23 remaining the third quarter. The period ended with the Bulldogs up 10-9.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
Lincoln Memorial senior attack Jared Courchene (Sagkeeng, Manitoba) for the seventh and final time with a goal at the 12:42 mark. The unassisted tally made the score 10-10. Sullivan and junior attack Alex Llerandi (Marietta, Ga.) responded with back-to-back goals (11:15, 7:46) to give the hosts a two-goal cushion. LMU posted one additional goal, but Jacob Ormerod and the WU defense shut the door.
 
TURNING POINT
 
Wingate's elder statesmen made plays when they needed to be made to give the Bulldogs the victory.
 
NOTABLES
 
-Adam Golia leads LMU with 39 goals. The Bulldogs held him to one score Saturday.
-The game featured 13 penalties, seven for LMU and six for Wingate.

Wingate head coach Tim Boyle: "I am proud of our guys for gutting out a hard-fought conference win against LMU. It was a grind from the first whistle to the last. LMU is a hard-working group of young men who never give up and are well coached. The conference is getting stronger and it is great to see. We look forward to the possibility of battling against them again in the tournament."

NEXT ON THE HORIZON

Wingate visits Newberry for a 7 p.m. SAC game on Saturday, April 7. LMU travels to number three Lenoir-Rhyne for a 1 p.m. league contest the same day.
