Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs took game one of Saturday afternoon's South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader 5-2 over Anderson University, while scoring six times in the final two innings in game two for a thrilling 6-5 victory to improve to 13-21 overall and 3-5 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 24-10 overall and 6-4 in league play.
Game One: Wingate 5, Anderson 2
Junior catcher
Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) was two-for-two with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Senior infielder
Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) added a double and two RBI, while sophomore pitcher
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) added a double and two runs scored.
Cailah Niles and
Rachel Barefield each homered to lead the Anderson offense.
After three scoreless innings, Wingate scored three times in the fourth. Reep led off the frame with a double to right center, while a walk put two on for Hannah. She made it 2-0 with a two-run double down the left field line, while Wells followed with an RBI single to put the Bulldogs on top by three.
Niles got Anderson on the board with a solo homer in the top of the fifth. Reep drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the frame, then scored on a wild pitch to put the 'Dogs back on top by three.
Barefield led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer to get the Trojans back within two runs. Wells put the lead back to three in the bottom of the inning when her fourth homer of the season made it 5-2.
Reep got the win, moving to 10-8 on the year. She allowed two runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight and walking one.
Harlie Duncan took the loss, falling to 10-3. She allowed four runs on five hits in five innings, striking out five and walking four.
Game Two: Wingate 6, Anderson 5
Freshman infielder
Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) was three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Reep added a hit and two RBI, while sophomore outfielder Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) went one-for-one with a hit and RBI. Sophomore infielder
Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) drove in the winning run, while classmate
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) had a hit and two runs scored.
Meghan Majeski and
Joshlyn Martin each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Anderson attack in game two, while
Kasey Grant contributed a hit and a run scored.
The Trojans did all of their damage with two outs in the second, scoring five times. Majeski's two-run single started the scoring, while Grant's RBI single made it 3-0. Martin followed with a two-run double to put Anderson on top by five.
That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the sixth. Two walks and an error loaded the bases, while Cashwelll's two-out, two-run single got Wingate on the board. Reep followed with another two-run single to make it a one-run game heading to the seventh.
VonCannon started the bottom of the seventh with a single, while an error and a sacrifice put runners on second and third with one out. Woods tied the game with an RBI single up the middle, while Floyd followed with the game-winning RBI single to left, giving Wingate the 6-5 victory.
Reep notched her second win of the day to move to 11-8 on the year, tossing 5 1/3 shutout innings in relief while striking out four and allowing just four hits.
Randee Bettis took the loss, falling to 6-3. She allowed two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
