Young Harris, Ga.----Wingate University senior
Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) connected on a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Bulldogs to a 4-2 victory in game one of Sunday's doubleheader against Georgia College, while Wingate trimmed a six-run deficit to one in game two, but the Bobcats held on for an 8-7 victory in NCAA Division II softball action. The Bulldogs move to 7-15 on the year, while the Bobcats go to 10-9 overall.
Game One: Wingate 4, Georgia College 2
Hannah had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game one. Freshman pitcher
Sam Hogan (Albemarle, N.C.) added two hits and an RBI, while sophomore infielder
Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) also drove in a run.
Junior outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) was hit by a pitch to start the first, went to second on a sacrifice, then moved to third on a single from
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.). Sapp scored on Swenson's sacrifice fly.
Junior catcher
Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) led off the second with a single, while an RBI single from Hogan gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Georgia College tied it in the fourth when
Haley Howell connected on a two-run homer.
That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) drew a lead-off walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice. Hannah came to the plate with one on and one out and connected on her first homer of the season, a two-run shot to left to make it 4-2.
Reep got the win, moving to 6-6 on the year. She allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking one.
Becca Meade took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings, striking out two and walking one to fall to 5-2 on the season.
Game Two: Georgia College 8, Wingate 7
Caroline Snider drove in a pair of runs to lead the Georgia College offense in game two.
Sarah Couch and
Baylee Hall each had an RBI and two runs scored, while Haley Howell collected an RBI and run scored.
Hannah Coursey collected two hits, an RBI and run scored, with
Sutton Long also adding a hit and run scored for the Bobcats.
Woods had a double, homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Reep was two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored, while Swenson went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored.
Snider's two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning for the Bobcats, with Howell and Long each adding RBI singles in the frame.
Woods cut the lead in half in the second when she connected on her third homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center.
A Couch RBI double and Coursey RBI single, along with a wild pitch and an error allowed four runs to score in the second for Georgia College to make it 8-2.
Wingate scored four times in the third to get back within two. Reep's RBI single started the scoring, while Swenson followed with an RBI single to make it a four-run game. Woods made it 8-6 with her two-run double to right center.
The Bulldogs got within one in the sixth, loading the bases for Reep, who made it a one-run game with an RBI single.
Kayla Price got the win, moving to 5-3. She allowed six runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking one. Hogan took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in one inning of work, falling to 1-6 on the season.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting a doubleheader against Converse at 1 p.m.
