Coker rallies for 16-15 SAC victory over Wingate

Hartsville, S.C.----Coker College finished the game on a 5-1 run, earning a 16-15 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Wingate University Wednesday afternoon at the Coker Athletic Field. Coker's Haley McCusker (Warwick, R.I.) and Faith Kent (Winter Springs, Fla.) combined for 11 goals.
 
For Wingate, sophomore attack Kendall Wells (Elkridge, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Casey Roux (Rochester, N.Y.) had four goals each. Roux added two assists, while Wells had one helper. WU freshman midfielder Nina Cifolilli (Kent Island, Md.) had two goals and a team-best three assists for the visiting Bulldogs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

-The game was tied 12 times.
-Wingate had a slight 35-31 advantage in shots and a 28-24 edge in shots on goal.
-The Bulldogs won 17-of-32 draw controls. The Cobras held a 12-8 edge in ground balls.
-Both goalies played 60 minutes. Wingate junior goalie Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) had eight saves, while Coker sophomore goalie Cassie Williams (Rockledge, Fla.) had 13 saves.
-Coker scored five goals in eight free-position tries, while Wingate was zero-for-six in free-position shots.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Half
 
The first half ended with an 8-8 tie. Wells opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 27:31 mark. Kent responded with back-to-back goals (23:44, 23:25) to put the Cobras up 2-1. The Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead on a Wells goal (from Roux) with 20:57 to play.
 
The first half was tied seven times (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8). King scored a man-up goal (10:30) to tie the contest at 6-6. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way with Wells finishing the frame with her third goal with seven seconds left in the half.
 
Second Half

The second half was very similar to the first with ties at nine, 10 and 11. Wingate scored three in a row with Cifolilli scoring the first and the last goal of the run to give the 'Dogs a 14-11 lead with 11:53 to play. McCusker scored two goals (9:35, 9:20) to tie the game 14-14. Freshman midfielder/attack Morgan Akers (La Plata, Md.) scored Wingate's last goal at the 8:12 plateau to give the Bulldogs' a 15-14 edge. Kent posted back-to-back goals (3:30, 3:22) to clinch the come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs missed a free-position opportunity with 22 seconds as Williams' 13th and final save sealed the deal.
