Wingate, N.C.----For the seventh time in the last 10 years, the 14th-ranked Wingate University men's tennis team has at least a share of the regular season conference title. The Bulldogs rolled to a 9-0 victory at Mars Hill University Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action, improving to 16-5 overall and 9-1 in the SAC. Mars Hill falls to 4-15 overall and 0-10 in league play.
Wingate cruised through doubles play, starting with an 8-2 victory from the number one team of sophomores
Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel). Belsito finishes the regular season with a 17-2 record at number one doubles. Junior
Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) teamed with freshman
Enrico Giacomini (Vicenza, Italy) for an 8-4 win at two doubles, while freshmen
Matthew Jones (Shrewsbury, United Kingdom) and
Josep Canyadell (Lleida, Spain) won by default at three doubles.
Belsito capped a 10-0 season at number one singles in league play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at one singles. The nation's 17th-ranked singles player dropped just one set in league play and is 17-2 overall this season. Jones won 6-4, 6-1 at two singles, with Canyadell rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number three singles. Giacomini prevailed 8-0 at four singles, with Geva winning 8-5 at five singles. Addison won by default at six singles to cap the sweep.
Wingate will be the number two seed in this week's SAC Tournament, hosting a quarterfinal match Wednesday. Opponent and time will be announced later in the day. The semifinals are Friday at 1 p.m. in Columbia, S.C., with the championship match slated for Saturday at noon in South Carolina.
