Anderson, S.C.----The 22nd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs rolled to a 13-2 victory in game one of Sunday afternoon's South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Anderson University, but the Trojans rallied for a 5-4 victory in game two to take claim the three-game SAC series. Wingate moves to 30-11 overall and 14-7 in the SAC. The Trojans go to 15-23 overall and 8-13 in league play.
Game One: Wingate 13, Anderson 2
Sophomore infielder
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) went four-for-five with three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Senior
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was three-for-three with a homer and three RBI, while freshman
Jed Bryant (Lexington, N.C.) added a homer and two RBI. Junior infielders
Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) and
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) each contributed an RBI and two runs scored, while seniors
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) and
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) combined for five hits and five runs scored.
Andrus led off the game with a double, then scored on Mellett's RBI double. Brown's RBI single gave the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead. A walk and Andrus single put two on for Mellett in the second, who gave Wingate a four-run lead with a two-run single down the right field line.
The Bulldogs took a six-run lead in the sixth when Brown connected on his 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot to right to make it 6-0.
Wingate scored seven times in the seventh to go on top by 13. Little' RBI single started the scoring after a lead-off double from Branton, while a Mellett two-run double and Schneider RBI double made it 11-0. Bryant capped the scoring for the Bulldogs in game one with his second career homer, a two-run shot to give Wingate a 13-run advantage.
Junior right-hander
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) got the win to move to 5-2 on the year. He allowed a run on three hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking three.
Will Gee took the loss, falling to 2-6. He allowed four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking two.
Game Two: Anderson 5, Wingate 4
William Thomas had a double and two RBI to lead the Anderson offense in game two.
Chandler Castleberry and
Brandon Odachowski each had a hit and an RBI, while Dillon Carpenter also drove in a run for the Trojans.
Mellett was two-for-four with a double to lead the Bulldogs, while junior catcher
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) went two-for-three with a homer and two runs scored. Branton and senior outfielder
Trent Wynn (New Bern, N.C.) each added an RBI in game two.
An error and Goodwin double put runners on second and third for the Bulldogs in the second inning. Branton drove home the first run, while Wynn's sacrifice fly made it 2-0. Mellett's RBI single in the top of the fifth put the Bulldogs on top by three.
Anderson answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Three straight singles loaded the bases, with an Odachowski RBI single getting the Trojans on the board. Thomas tied it with a two-run double, while a Carpenter sacrifice fly and Castleberry RBI single gave Anderson a 5-3 lead.
Goodwin got the Bulldogs within a run with a solo homer in the top of the sixth. Andrus led off the seventh with a double, but was stranded on base after a groundout and two strikeouts ended the game.
Christian Hendrix got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings, moving to 2-1.
Matthew Stanley worked 1 1/3 innings for his fourth save of the year, allowing a hit and striking out three. Junior right-hander
Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to USC Aiken for a 6 p.m. start.
