Mobile, Ala.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the 2018 season in style, jumping out to a 5-0 halftime lead en route to a 6-1 victory at Spring Hill in NCAA Division II women's soccer action. Wingate starts the season 1-0, while Spring Hill falls to 0-1 overall.
The Bulldogs scored five times in a 20-minute span to take a convincing lead. It was the senior
Gabby Fleishli getting the scoring started, taking a
Taylor Krakower feed and putting Wingate on top 1-0 in the 13th minute.
Wingate struck again two minutes later, when
Morgan Gray found the back of the net from 30 yards out to make it 2-0.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the 29th minute with
Morgan Zanardi scoring from long distance. Wingate took a four-goal lead less than two minutes later when
Sophie Jendrzejczyk scored off assists from
Colleen Zickert and
Alicia Rubio Garcia.
Garcia would go on to net her first collegiate goal two minutes later, scoring off a
Cat McCollom assist to put Wingate on top 5-0.
Spring Hill got on the board 11 minutes into the second half, but the Bulldogs pushed the advantage back to five in the 77th minute when
Dayna Marshall scored her first career goal from the edge of the box to make the final margin 6-1.
Wingate held a 21-7 advantage in shots, including a 16-3 edge in the opening half. The Bulldogs held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, while
Abbey Frail collected four saves to register the victory.
The Bulldogs will remain in Alabama over the weekend, returning to action Monday at Auburn-Montgomery at 2 p.m.
