Zickert leads Bulldogs to 4-3 OT win at Auburn-Montgomery

Montgomery, Ala.----Wingate University senior midfielder Colleen Zickert scored two goals including the overtime game-winner Monday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a thrilling 4-3 victory at Auburn-Montgomery in NCAA Division II women's soccer action. Wingate moves to 2-0 on the season, while the Warhawks fall to 0-2 overall.

Auburn-Montgomery got the scoring started 30 minutes into the opening half when Ruby Mendez scored off an Ariel Jones assist.

Wingate had the answer less than three minutes later when Zickert scored her first goal of the day, getting an assist from freshman Alicia Rubio Garcia. The freshman Garcia has a goal and two assists in her first two games as a Bulldog.

Wingate added to its lead less than three minutes into the second half, when freshman McKenna Delong scored her first collegiate goal to make it 2-1.

The Bulldogs took a two-goal lead in the 64th minute, with freshman Dayna Marshall scoring her second goal in as many games to make it 3-1.

Auburn-Montgomery scored twice in the next five minutes to tie it. Mendez's second goal of the day got the Warhawks within one, while Julia Simones found the back of the net off a Melissa Fernandez assist to make it 3-3.

Wingate was on the attack late in the first overtime, with a shot from senior Gabby Fleischli getting saved with just under two minutes to go. The 'Dogs got the winner less than a minute later when Zickert netted her second goal of the day with under a minute to go in the first overtime period.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Warhawks 20-19 on the day, with a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal. Abbey Frail collected five saves for the Bulldogs, while Dejon Fletcher had seven saves for Auburn-Montgomery. Wingate junior Taylor Krakower led the way with four shots, including three shots on goal. Zickert also registered three shots on goal for the match.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Concord in the home opener at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
