‘Dogs collect nine medals on last night of Fall Frenzy Invite; both teams claim second-place finishes

Charlotte, N.C.----Wingate University junior Maike Hoener (Langlingen, Germany) won the 200 Breaststroke Sunday evening, leading the Bulldogs to a total haul of nine medals (five individual, four relay) in the Sheraton Le Meridien Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte. Both nationally-ranked Wingate teams finished second on the crowded team charts (Sunday night results, full event results).
 
Wingate won five individual medals (one gold, two silvers, two bronzes) and four relay silver medals (the women's 400 Freestyle Relay quartet) on Sunday evening. Hoener's individual victory was a highlight, as the Academic All-America® candidate posted a time of 2:16.25 to edge teammate and classmate Anne-Sofie Nissen (Copenhagen, Denmark) by 0.19 seconds in the 200 Breaststroke final.
 
The WU women's 400 Freestyle Relay team collected four silver medals, thanks to its second-place showing (3:26.66). Senior team captain Leticia Odorici (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) swam the first leg to set the pace for the Bulldogs. Wingate sophomore Kate Agger (Broomall, Pa.) was third in the 1650 Freestyle with her bronze-medal time of 16:57.04.
 
For the Wingate men, junior Iran Almeida (Roanoke, Va.) recorded an NCAA Division II "A" cut on the way to a second-place finish in the 200 Butterfly (1:44.77). Queens sophomore Alex Kunert (Berlin, Germany) had to swim a MCAC pool record (1:43.47) to defeat the Bulldog newcomer. Wingate junior Nazarii Kosylo (Sniatyn, Ukraine) was third in the same race (1:49.28).
 
On the men's team leader boards, Wingate concluded the three-day, 12-team event with 2020 points. Five-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Queens won the Fall Frenzy Invitational with 2604.5 points. Nova Southeastern, Gardner-Webb and George Washington claimed spots three through five.
 
The women's leader boards looked very similar, as Wingate finished second (among 16 teams) with 2369 points. Five-time defending national champion Queens recorded 2819 points to take the team title. George Washington took a third-place finish back to the nation's capital, while Nova Southeastern and UNC Asheville finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Wingate University swimming teams will enjoy the Thanksgiving break before starting fall semester final examinations on Wednesday, December 4. The Bulldogs will return to the pool December 16-19 for the University of Tampa Spartan Invitational in Clearwater, Florida (Clearwater Aquatic Center).
