Coleman and Jeter lift Wingate to 59-49 SAC victory over Coker

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University post players Teliyah Jeter and Destiny Coleman combined for 24 points and 21 rebounds, boosting the Bulldogs to a 59-49 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over Coker College in Cuddy Arena Tuesday night. Wingate improves to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while Coker slips to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.

"I am proud of the effort tonight to bounce back after a tough loss on Saturday. This is the first game we have been positive assist-to-turnover, so we are moving in the right direction. We need to build on this as we prepare for Carson-Newman."

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 37.9 percent from the field, while Coker hit 30.3 percent
- The Bulldogs outscored the Cobras 32-26 in the paint
- Wingate turned 15 Coker turnovers into 15 points
- Both teams tried 11 three-point field goals
- The Bulldogs made three from long range, while the Cobras hit two triples

FIRST QUARTER

- Coker led 6-2 on a Saquita Joyner basket with 7:34 left in the first frame
- The Cobras led by as many as five in the first quarter before the Bulldogs made their move
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Stephen and Bryanna Troutman gave Wingate a 16-14 lead after the first 10 minutes

SECOND QUARTER

- Wingate held Coker without a field goal for the last five minutes of the quarter
- The quarter featured six tie scores, the last at 24-24 on a basket by Coker's Shay Jackson (5:21)
- The Bulldogs finished the second stanza on a 9-1 run to take a 33-25 lead to the halftime locker room
- Jaxson Douglas hit a three-pointer to make the score 31-24 Wingate with three minutes left
- Wingate hit seven-of-13 field goals (53.8 percent) in the second quarter

THIRD QUARTER


- Back-to-back hoops by Joyner and Hope Richardson pulled Coker within one at 35-34
- Jeter sandwiched two baskets around a Stephen lay-up to make the score 43-36
- Wingate led 44-39 after three quarters of play

FOURTH QUARTER

- A lay-up by Hannah Clark gave the 'Dogs a 49-39 edge two minutes into the fourth quarter
- Coker would get no closer than seven points down the stretch
- An Ashauntee Nelson hoop brought the Cobras within 53-46 at the two-minute mark
- The Bulldogs led by as many as 13 points down the stretch

- The Bulldogs visit Carson-Newman for a 2 p.m. SAC contest Saturday
