Offense stays hot as #20 Wingate takes two against Wolves

Wingate, N.C.----The 20th-rankedWingate University Bulldogs piled up 21 runs for the second straight doubleheader, taking two against Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate took the opener 9-6, while rolling to a 12-3 victory in six innings in game two. The 'Dogs move to a perfect 12-0 at home, going to 20-8 on the season and 3-1 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 20-8 overall and 2-2 in league play.

"Our offense was great all the way around, they just kept producing. We work a lot on not chasing pitches and we've really focused on our discipline at the plate. Our pitchers fought hard today. It was a great team effort and performance today. We'll just keep taking it one day at a time, one game at a time."

- Loney followed with an RBI single, while a Cashwell RBI single put WU on top by three

FOURTH INNING

- A Reep walk and Swenson double put runners on second and third in the bottom of the frame
- Wells lined a two-run double off the wall in center to make it 8-3
- Wells scored on a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs on top by six

SEVENTH INNING

- Simonds capped the scoring with a three-run homer to left center in the top of the seventh

WRAPUP

- Weidner got the win, moving to 10-4
- She allowed five earned runs on eight hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking three
- Casey Cunningham took the loss, falling to 1-1
- She allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out two and walking one

- She got the Bulldogs within a run with a sacrifice fly, making it 3-2

FIFTH INNING

- Wingate scored four times in the fifth to take the lead
- A pair of walks and a sacrifice put Sapp on third base with one out
- She scored on a squeeze bunt from Sells to tie it
- Wells ripped a two-run double to left to put the 'Dogs on top by two
- Floyd capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single, making it 6-3

SIXTH INNING

- Sapp started the frame with a single, while back-to-back walks loaded the bases
- Sells plated a pair of runs with a two-run single to push the lead to five
- Loney followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-3
- Floyd ended the game with her fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to make it 12-3

WRAPUP

- Reep got the win, moving to 9-3
- She allowed three unearned runs on six hits in six innings, striking out five and walking four
