#16 Newberry outslugs Wingate 8-5 in series opener Friday night

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs connected on three homers Friday night, but the 16th-ranked Newberry College Wolves piled up 14 hits including seven doubles, prevailing 8-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Wolves win their 10th straight, improving to 29-7 overall and 12-1 in the SAC. The 'Dogs see their eight-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 23-10 overall and 9-4 in league play.

- The Wolves had seven extra-base hits, all of which were doubles
- The Bulldogs had four extra-base hits including three homers
- Wingate committed five errors; Newberry had a pair of errors

- An RBI double from Dalton Landsdowne made it 2-0, while Danton Hyman's RBI single put the Wolves up by three
- Schneider blasted a solo shot to left in the bottom of the frame to get Wingate on the board
- Dula followed with his first career homer, getting the 'Dogs within a run
- Ricky Clark lined a one-out single to right center, then scored on Guy's RBI single to tie it at three

FIFTH INNING

- Aiden Baur's two-run double to right field put the Wolves on top 5-3
- Jed Bryant drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the frame
- Llewellyn followed with a towering two-run shot to left to tie it at five

SIXTH INNING

- Landsdowne put Newberry back on top with an RBI double, plating Butler to make it 6-5

EIGHTH INNING

- An RBI double from Zane Tarrance in the eighth capped the scoring, giving Newberry an 8-5 advantage

WRAPUP

- Charlie Fessler got the win, moving to 4-3
- He allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings, striking out three and walking two
- Quinton Driggers notched his second save of the year
- He tossed four shutout innings, striking out six while allowing two hits
- Turgeon took the loss, falling to 6-2
- He allowed four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking one
