Slow start dooms Wingate in setback at Tusculum

The Wingate University Bulldogs scored just six points over the first 12 minutes of the contest Saturday afternoon, falling 75-53 at Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Pioneers improve to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in league play.

- With Wingate struggling early, Tusculum jumped out to a 23-6 lead 12 minutes in
- Keaston Brown's bucket at the 8:14 mark put the Pioneers on top by 17
- Two Dawkins free throws and a Cottingham layup got WU within 14 with 4:29 to go
- Dillon Smith's three pushed the lead back to 17
- Wilson knocked down a pair of threes to get the 'Dogs within 13 at the 2:33 mark
- Trenton Gibson's free throw with two seconds left gave Tusculum a 36-20 halftime lead

SECOND HALF

- A Quantra Taylor dunk got Wingate within 14 early in the second half
- Tusculum scored the next six, taking a 42-22 lead on Smith's jumper at the 17:28 mark
- The Pioneers added a 10-0 run to go on top by 27 on Justin Mitchell's layup with 9:18 left
- A Cottingham layup and Dawkins three got WU within 18 with 5:36 remaining
- The Bulldogs would get no closer the rest of the way
