Pioneers use two big runs to take down Bulldogs Saturday afternoon

Greenville, Tenn.----The Tusculum University Pioneers went on a 20-0 run in the second quarter and 15-0 run in the third quarter Saturday afternoon, prevailing 77-57 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Pioneer Arena. Tusculum improves to 13-3 overall and 8-2 in the SAC, winning their fourth straight. Wingate falls to 11-6 overall and 5-5 in league play.
 
KEY STATS

- Tusculum shot 45.6 percent from the field on the evening, Wingate shot 34.4 percent
- The Pioneers shot 27 percent (six-for-22) from three-point range, the 'Dogs shot 13 percent from beyond the arc (one-for-seven)
- Each team collected 43 rebounds
- The Bulldogs had a 40-38 edge in points in the paint
- TU held a 12-11 advantage in second-chance points

FIRST QUARTER

- The Pioneers scored the first four points, but a Jeter layup at the 6:33 mark tied it at six
- A Maeola Willis bucket midway through the quarter tied the game at 10
- The Pioneers scored 10 of the next 12 points to take an eight-point advantage
- A pair of Saylor free throws got the 'Dogs within four at the 1:43 mark
- Tusculum capped the scoring with a Kasey Johnson jumper to make it 23-16

SECOND QUARTER

- Wingate got the first field goal of the quarter from Stephen
- Tusculum would keep Wingate from scoring from the field for the next nine minutes of action
- The Pioneers would go on a 20-0 run spanning six minutes of play
- Mia Long score nine for Tusculum in the flurry
- With two minutes left in the half the 'Dogs made four from the charity stripe to make it 43-22
- A Jeter layup with 50 seconds remaining capped the scoring, with WU trailing 45-24 at halftime
 
THIRD QUARTER

- Clark got Wingate on the board first in the third frame at the 9:09 mark
- Tusculum reached the half century mark on a Jalia Arnwine three
- Jeter answered with a layup for the Bulldogs with 7:50 to go
- The Pioneers used another big flurry, with a 15-0 run extending their lead to 35
- Ingram and Saylor would notch the next four points for Wingate
- Brianna Dixon's three gave the Pioneers 69-38 lead late in the frame

FOURTH QUARTER

- The fourth was the only quarter that the Bulldogs outscored the Pioneers
- A Clark three was the first bucket from the field in the frame for WU at the 7:19 mark
- Midway through the final quarter Jeter's layup cut the Pioneer lead to 24
- With 1:32 remaining a Coleman fast break layup made it 75-55
- An Ingram layup capped the scoring with 14 seconds to go
