Wingate holds off Queens behind Jeter’s big night

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs held off visiting Queens University Wednesday night, picking up a 52-49 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 12-6 overall and 6-5 in the SAC, while Queens falls to 4-13 overall and 3-8 in league play.
 
THOUGHTS FROM COACH HANCOCK

"It was not pretty, but it was a really nice learning opportunity. They do some different things defensively that we don't see often. We were able to fight through and get the win. But there are things that we can do better and learn from it. I'd much rather learn from a win than a loss. So, we'll take it and move on and get ready for Carson-Newman."

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 40 percent from the field on the evening, Queens shot 31.4 percent
- The Royals shot 32 percent (six-for-19) from three-point range, the Bulldogs shot 25 percent from beyond the arc (three-for-12)
- WU pulled down 38 rebounds, while QU collected 35
- The 'Dogs had a dominant 30-18 edge in points in the paint
- The Bulldogs held a 11-3 advantage in second-chance points
- Wingate had 22 turnovers, Queens had 21

- Jaxson Douglas added nine points, going four-for-four at the free throw line
- Destiny Coleman had eight points and five rebounds
- Elana Ingram registered eight points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists

FIRST QUARTER

- Wingate got on the board first, with Jeter registering a block and making it down the court for a layup
- An Ingram three-point play and another Jeter bucket gave the 'Dogs a 7-2 lead at the midway points
- A pair of Kristin Eanes free throws got the Royals within one with 3:41 remaining
- With two minutes left in the frame WU got back-to-back buckets for Jeter to make it 11-6
- A pair of Queens free throws and an Ilene Hurley layup made 13-8 with one minute remaining
- Douglas capped the scoring in the frame for Wingate with a pair of free throws

SECOND QUARTER

- Douglas knocked down a three seven seconds into the second frame
- Queens answered with an Eanes three at the 8:13 mark
- A Clark bucket gave the Bulldogs a 24-15 edge with six minutes remaining
- The Royals would go on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes of action
- Eanes and Tia McMiilian scored all 10 for Queens in the flurry
- Wingate would finish the half with a Clark three to make it 27-25 going in halftime
 
THIRD QUARTER

- Queens took the early lead with a McMillan three with eight minutes to go
- WU answered by scoring the next six points, getting two buckets from Coleman in the run
- At the midway point WU got a Clark three to extend the leas to 36-31
- McMillain's bucket got QU within three, but Ingram and Clark answered with four straight points
- Jeter's layup in the final seconds gave the 'Dogs a 42-35 lead heading to the final frame

FOURTH QUARTER

- Queens started the final frame with a pair of buckets from Julia Raflund
- A Coleman layup was the first bucket from the field in the frame for WU at the 7:58 mark
- Midway through the final quarter a Eanes layup got the Royals within three
- Two Ingram free throws and a Coleman bucket gave Wingate the 49-42 advantage
- Eanes and McMillan score six unanswered for the Royals to get within one
- Jeter's free throw with 23 seconds left put the 'Dogs on top by two
- Queens got a trip to line to tie it with nine seconds remaining
- Caitlyn Moore made one-of-two from the line for the Royals
- Two seconds later Douglas earned a trip to the line for Wingate and knocked down both to make it 52-49

UP NEXT

- Wingate hosts Carson-Newman Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN3
- The Bulldogs are on the road next Wednesday, traveling to Coker at 5:30 p.m.
