Ingram’s career night helps Wingate take 58-49 overtime victory over Newberry

Wingate, N.C.---Wingate University sophomore guard Elana Ingram posted career-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Bulldogs to a 58-49 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over Newberry Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena. Wingate is 15-11 overall and 9-10 in league action, while the Wolves slip to 14-10 overall and 11-8 in the SAC. The host Bulldogs outscored their South Carolina guests 9-0 in the overtime period.

FIRST QUARTER

- The lead changed hands five times (with two ties) in the first quarter
- Newberry scored the first four points of the contest to take a 4-0 lead
- Baskets by Jeter and Ingram quickly tied the score at 4-4
- A Douglas three-point field goal gave Wingate a 17-12 lead at the 1:51 mark
- The Bulldogs led 17-16 after the first 10 minutes
- Newberry made three triples in the first quarter with two by senior guard Kelsey McDermott

SECOND QUARTER

- Wingate made five-of-10 field goals in the second quarter to maintain its lead
- A Jeter jumper on a Douglas dish put the hosts up 27-22 with 1:51 to go
- An Ingram lay-up made the score 29-24 with 49 seconds left
- A traditional three-point play by Newberry's Talia Roberts completed the first half scoring
- The Wolves stayed close despite the fact they made only four-of-15 field goals
- Newberry was zero-of-five from downtown in the second stanza
 
THIRD QUARTER

- Wingate pushed its lead to 37-29 on an Ingram jumper with 5:34 left
- The eight-point margin was Wingate's largest in regulation
- The Wolves battled back, despite the fact they hit only three-of-16 field goals in the third
- The Bulldogs managed only five field-goal makes in 17 attempts
- Wingate led 41-37 entering the fourth quarter

FOURTH QUARTER

- Newberry outscored Wingate 12-8 in the fourth quarter
- The fourth quarter was the only period when the Wolves outscored the Bulldogs
- The score was tied at 45, 47 and 49
- A lay-up by Newberry freshman guard Courtney Virgo gave the visitors a 49-47 lead with 1:50 left
- The Wolves' lead was their first since the 9:36 mark of the second quarter
- The Bulldogs made turnovers on their next two possessions
- Newberry returned the favor, committing back-to-back miscues as well
- A steal by MaeOla Willis allowed Clark to tie the game 49-49 on a lay-up with 29 seconds left
- Newberry did not get off a final shot, as Wingate's Willis collected another steal with three seconds to go
 
OVERTIME
 
- Clark hit a lay-up on Wingate's first possession (4:39) to give the hosts the lead for good
- Clark and Troutman had eight of the Bulldogs' nine overtime points
- Troutman hit an inside hoop at the 3:11 mark to make the score 53-49 Wingate
- The Troutman bucket was Wingate's last field goal
- The Bulldogs hit five-of-eight free throws down the stretch to keep the Wolves at bay
